Last Wednesday I managed to drop the carb assembly on the cam cover and totally effed up the paint on the cover!   :( :'(   I removed and repainted it, but removal helped point out just how faded some polished parts were getting. So, today I bought a bench grinder and polishing wheels (finally!) and spent the day learning how to use them. With all of the polished covers on my bike it was either pay the big bucks to have the faded ones renewed or get my a$$ in gear and learn how to do it myself. Here are a few of my first attempts, in place on the bike:

I'll probably finish up the rest this week. The bench grinder was definitely worth the money and probably one of the smartest investments I've made on the project so far...

Great work there on the polishing.

I also taught myself to polish parts on my bench grinder using a set of polishing wheels and various compounds - very satisfying.

Nice!

I like your setup.  Is there a way to identify your light?  Our local truck/trail went out of business - I have to find my light online.

I rode the bejesus out of her last night, attempted a ton, got to 90, figured it's like first time sex, you can keep trying but it will happen when time is right  ;D

The part number for that light is RP-1307R  RoadPro Truck and Automotive Accessories.

You can do the ton easy on a 750 buddy, just twist a little harder ;) This video is kinda long, the good part is at the very end. Oh,and you only need the first three gears to hit the ton 8)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src=" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Thanks for the part number!

I actually just called Gieco... if I add collision to my moto insurance for 52 bucks annually and 10 roadside service, i get unlimited towing (75miles per) for 62 bucks a year... thats got to be less than the cost of one tow.

The weather here in the K.C. area has been ridiculously ideal now for a week, and looks to continue for at least another week...so I took out the 400F again today just blasting around out in the boonies...since I got the bike the idle's been okay but not quite turbine smooth...the thing ran great to begin with, even better after I synched the carbs, I was just blipping the throttle periodically at long lights as it would struggle a bit...I decided to mess with the mixture screws today. They still had the black plastic caps on them which would limit the turn with a little knob on the side. I took them off...I turned the screws out which didnt help, then turned them in about 3/4 of a turn on all four cyls...right away as I did each it just smoothed up alot...had to turn the idle screw out some as rpms climbed to 1600...brought it down to 1250 and just tweaked each carb one lat time...Now it idles like a Lexus V8...I took it for a little shake down run and it feels even better now...It was always okay on a wide open 3 gear redline run...but it was just a touch off on some random throttle settings and situations...plus a little hot rod popping from downshifts or overrun...now  the thing is running like it's fuel injected...anywhere anytime...just VROOOOOOOMMMM! such a super sweet smooth thing it is...and the sound...since you kind of have to twist it to move smartly...now just every run from a stop or light is like this sublime old school busy but serious ripping sound...where I used to feel it sounded best at redline...now...6,7,8 grand, it's all the same...maybe now I'll take it a little easier on the old girl...GO Lil Red!!!

Picked up a 750 K2 3 weeks ago from the original owner and have been basically spending every spare second cleaning and making it road worthy, with some minor parts to replace here and there.  Been sitting since '99 in a garage.

Today was a good day.  After the typical 3k tune-up, polishing out the wazoo, some new shoes, and pulling the carbs more than I wanted to, I got her registered today and took a nice 1 hour ride.  She now purrs like a kitten and roars like a lion :)

Always good to have the number of a reputable cycle towing company in your phone too!

I remember calling around to get a tow for my CB once. Cheapest was $250. The most common rate was $300. You'd think for such a small island, towing wouldn't be that expensive. I just decided to upgrade my allstate roadside assistance to the RV one, because they don't have an option for just bikes, and the option covering my jeep doesn't allow me to use it on my bike (wtf is up with that?!).

Once I started working at the dealer, I found out we charge one hour of labor for a tow ($85+tax). It doesn't matter how far away you are, it's still the same. I remember it took me about three hours round trip to pick up a bike (it was on the other side of the island).

I broke off a bolt.  F***.

They don't call it a money pit for nothing.  Starting to get the "might as wells" on this project.  Now that this main journal bolt is broken, I 'might as well' get heavy duty studs.  And since I have to now take out the OEM cylinder studs I 'might as well' put in heavy duty studs there too.  And now since the crank had to come out (to fix the broken bolt) I 'might as well' replace the primary chain/tensioner and cam chain/tensioner.  You all know how it goes. :)

Andrew, really curious how that bolt broke, they are beefy. Not the place for a discussion, but was something in the hole?

Master cyl rebuild kit installed last night.  Bled front for 15 min.  Couldnt get it solid.
Tied brake lever to throttle grip.  Bars to the left.
More bubbles at the top this am as i walked past it to take the car.
Tapped it a few times to release them.   I'll try again tonight.

Last night I continued my first try at carb rebuilding. The carb assembly had been soaking in simple green for a couple days. I got the air box all cleaned up (still need to get some linseed oil or something to try and restore the shine). I semi polished the fuel bowls with steel wool. I tore down the carb rack and also the #1 carb. Rebuilt #1 carb.... 3 to go!

Spent a couple hours with the buffer tonight. Finished one of the fork legs, part of the other, and part of the sprocket cover. When I got sick of it I went online and ordered a battery strap and some fork seals. Now I need to figure out how to remove the clearcoat on my engine covers without messing up the paint on the cases and cyliders.
