I wanted to change out the stock headlight mounts so I had to pull the fork tubes clear out, no big, but when I took the front wheel off, he right lower leg..FELL ON THE FLOOR!
So I rebuilt the forks, polished the lower legs, and the triple tree. BLING! Or as my son would say...shiny:)
Yeah, rebuilding the forks is one of the cheapest and easiest things to do on these bikes.
And yet I think a lot people neglect the forks unless they're leaking.

On the other hand, the PO did work on the forks on the CJ360 I'm working on now and managed to make some pretty basic errors.....
Yesterday I painted them. Today I rebuilt them correctly. :)

Well it was only 12 deg C max today, (53 deg F) but being the manly man that I am, I braved the cold to do some work on Ken's K1. Now that his chrome stuff is back from the platers it's time to reassemble his rebuilt front forks, but all I managed in 6 hours was cleaning and stripping the front caliper and disc, beadblasting and painting those items with nice new black epoxy paint, cured in my industrial oven at 200 deg F. Hopefully next weekend I'll get the front end back together! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ha ha, if I was wearing a T shirt and shorts I'd be in the pneumonia ward by now mate, but yeah, when it comes to cold weather, I am a wuss. (woose?) God I hate cold weather! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I've been working on getting the '73 CB500 setup for my main transportation.  I finally got the luggage installed and the lights wired up.   A couple of days ago, the lowers I bought off eBay came in and I installed those as well.

Here's what it looks like now:

Got lazy yesterday so I didn't do anything except sit at my computer all day playing Team Fortress 2. Spent all morning today goofing off, then finally got outside a bit ago.

Checked the points. At the F mark on all 4 cylinders, the points were BARELY open, and not open at all on one of them. Adjusted them to spec, and they're all fine now. Gonna try tuning my carbs again since I THINK I've gotten rid of the ignition problem with that. Fired right up, idled with barely a twist of the idle screw, and actually revved up without a stumble.

Now to go for a quick test ride then sync the carbs.

Put the gas tank and the seat back, cleaned it a little bit and drove ~2 km without a license plate  8)

Took the black K2 and put the carbs back.

Yeah, it is comfy, I did almost 2200 miles on it in last years rally.  The tank, seat, carbs and luggage are off my '72.  The lowers on the fairing I bought on eBay a few days be for I wrecked the '72.  The only time I've seen Vetter lowers on eBay before and there were two different auctions with complete pairs.  One set was used with slots cut into them for a crash bar (the ones I bought) and one set that is supposed to be NOS.  It's still up on eBay last I looked.

I had to raise the luggage up to clear the stock exhaust and that pushed the trunk into the back of the seat, so I had to modify the trunk brackets a bit.  It makes the setup look a bit different than it did on the '72 (my avatar).

Today I rode it to work and back, twice.

Rode it after putting 110 mains back in. That fixed the 1/2-WOT throttle position rumbling from being too rich. But it turns out 1/8-1/2 throttle will also rumble. I think I have to move my needle clip back to stock position (4th from the top. It's at 5th from the top right now).

I guess that's what I get for not making sure my bike was in proper mechanical working order before trying to tune the carbs :(

Will I have to sync the carbs again if I'm JUST adjusting the needle position? I have to derack them, but I won't be adjusting the slide position.

Primed the side covers I bought from Frankenfrankenstuff, replaced the pooched master cylinder on kz1000 I'm working on. Its sporting one from my 78 cb750 parts bike, checked the ignition points gap on it after I flushed and bled the front and rear brakes. Need to check the valves, set up and sync the carbs and I can take it around the block for the first time. It's been off the road since 95, exciting!

Make sure you post some pics mate. I've got a friend here who has just about finished rebuilding the engine on his KZ1000, and today he emailed me to say he'd scored a Z1 with some good spares, all for free! Bastard! He's getting out of bikes (he's an old Vietnam Vet and pretty knocked around) so I'm hoping he'll sell me the Z1, I'd love to have another one! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Cleaned the chain with brake cleaner, and oiled up with 20-50 wt oil.

I know its probably not the right way to do it, but, its all I have at this time.

Better than nothing IMO.

Also took the front wheel off cause it squeals and tightens up when turning. When off, noticed the axle was loose on the wheel its self and that the caliper wasn't adjust properly, tightened and adjusted..............works alittle better.

Needs pads, and maybe a caliper rebuild, will do in the very near future. Would really prefer to replace the entire front braking system (MC, Caliper, Hoses/lines and possibly the brake switch).

Rode it to work, front end seems a little more stabile, doesn't hop as much when cornering. Doesn't squeal except on braking, not while moving anymore.

If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

Will do Terry,

I'm going to check the valves tomorrow and hopefully get the carbs sync'd, can't wait to ride it. It sounded nasty when I got it fired up last month, real mean. Made my Honda  sound meek, haha. You may be right about the cb not seeing much use, I've got plans for it after I get a season or so out of it. Swingarm, front end and frame bracing are in the works, vintage style with some modern amenities!

Cheers
