Well it was a fantastic day today, the sun was shining, and for the first time in ages, it was warm! I've got boxes full of parts that I bought for my bikes over the winter, but was too pissed off with the weather to bother installing, but today I decided to give my Suzuki GS1000 a birthday, with new 530 chain and sprocket conversion, new "Euro" bars, and grippy grips.
Everything went well, although I was surprised to find that the sprocket shaft nut was loose, and only held in place by the bent over tab of the lock washer. Oops! The standard gearing is all wrong IMHO, way too low, and the engine is pulling 4500 RPM @60 MPH in 5th gear, so I chose a 17/47 tooth sprocket combo to drop the revs in top gear for less RPM's and better fuel economy too.
Being such a great day, I couldn't just fix it and park it, so around 3 pm, I took it for a blast up into the mountains via to my favourite set of twisties. The temperature was a tad cooler, but concentrating on not throwing the old beast away in the multitude of 10-30 MPH corners while trying to get around them at double the posted speed was keeping me warm. I stopped to take some pics, then enjoyed the ride back home again.
The new gearing had done the trick, it now pulls 3500 RPM @ 60 MPH, and will happily pull from as low as 10 MPH in top gear without any stumbling. I couldn't believe how much smoother it felt with the new chain and sprockets, it was quite surprising. Like any old project bike though, there were a couple of issues, it's still running too rich so feels "fluffy" down low, the left handlebar switch needs replacing (damn blinkers won't go off like they should, which almost caused me to crash into a car) and I need to crank the rear shock spring preload a tad, 'cos I'm a fat bastard!
I love the new bars and grips!
I realised that I hadn't had lunch, and by now it was dinner time, so I drove around to my local pizza shop and ordered a "Terry Special", and washed this baby down with some Chivas and coke. All in all, a truly wonderful day! Cheers, Terry.
