Had to run a quick errand up north and on the way the bike starts to just cut out at anything over 1/4 throttle.  I'm almost to my destination so I pull off the freeway and take side streets. Once there I put the bike on the center stand and I guess I was on something soft on the right side the bike starts to fall over.  I catch it and it softly falls on the right side bar end mirror and breaks it off. Luckily no other damage.  I get the bike back up and start looking for issues for the cutting out. Electrical is all good (visually), plenty of fuel in the tank and getting to the carbs but it could be the filter.  I take care of my business and limp the bike to the shop I like around the corner.  He thinks it's the in line filter and he gives me some new hose and swap it out.  Bike fires up, idles great and rev's up fine.  I take if for quick spin and bam..acts like it's just not getting any fuel.  We check a few things but I have to leave it as I need to get home to pick up my daughter from school.  50 buck cab ride home, plus whatever he's going to charge plus a new mirror.  Days like today I really would love a modern bike.

Do you have any rust in your tank mate? Could be that rust had clogged your filter, then when you installed the new fuel line it sent rust particles into your carbs? I love my old bikes, but they occasionally piss me off, and that's when my modern bike is just so good. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Not mine but one of the coolest bikes ever designed IMO.  Don't know what a Neander is but I do know it is an Opel 500 from the 30s.  Waaaaaaay out of my price range so I just look at it in my avatar and my desktop background,  and drool.  Maybe I should carry the drool bucket from the Monty Python skit...Larry

Hey Terry.  Tank is spotless.  He first thing I thought of was they my inline filter was clogged  but it was clear.  He bike will idle perfectly and while sitting will rev several times fine then suddenly act like its out of gas.

I'll swing by the shop later this morning and hopefully have some answers.

Mike - sounds like the tank vent could be clogged?  Where'd you take the bike?

Limey I was just around the corner when it happened.

I pulled the line and gas was flowing fine so I'm guessing the vent is okay.

Thanks Eric. The bikes are from up there - MN & WI, Nick found the blue one for me. Cheaper to ship in bulk, so found the red one and an RD350 too (I think I'm catching up to you!)
The plan is to restore, they don't need much, too nice to chop up.

Well nothing today but yesterday I did fire it up for the first time in a year and a half. In that time I tore the entire motor down, added a cam/cam chain/adjustable cam sprocket, new valves/springs/retainers, added some oil passages as show in Hondaman's book, and a new exhaust. It started right up and while clearly needing some tuning, ran great and didn't cease or explode so all in all I'd call it a success!

Well I just heard from the shop.  First the floats were set wrong and two of my exhaust valves were nearly closed.  Since he had the carbs off he soda blasted them and completely cleaned them and now the bike is running great.  My compression is a little low 135/133/136/131 but hey the bike is 38 years old.

Now my problem is this.  I'm sure he set the floats when I had the bike in there for him to do the wiring harness and get the bike ready for inspection. I'm also sure he did a valve adjust at the same time.  I'm looking everywhere for the receipt from when that happened to check but can't seem to find it.  He claims he didn't do any of the above.  Secondly I'm really baffled as to how this suddenly became an issue. I've put 400mi on the bike and never touched the floats or adjusted the valves..how do valves suddenly get tight and how do floats go from allowing enough fuel in the bowls to not allowing enough fuel in the bowls.

There is a  part of me that thinks he found something he did wrong when he had the bike the first time and is covering his tracks.

Could be the situation, I'd keep a very close eye on the work this shop does.

The 650 tires were a little low so I rode the 550 to work .  First time I fired it up in 10 days and it fired right up and rode great.  I forgot how cold natured this bike is.  The ride out of my neighborhood is a good warm up and then out into the real world.

painted some paint, blasted some soda, and buffed some aluminum... just a bit... no rush.

"I'm just going to lube the chain" turned into adjusting the chain, points, and timing. At least it should be good to go now for the slimey crud run next weekend.

One of these days I need to do another compression test on the K6 just to see how much it's come up since I got it running.
