We have two 1971 CB 500's.  One was stored for 4 years outside at the very least.  We just stripped that bike down last night and pulled the engine after having it up and running.  Got a lot of work done.  Going to have at it with the soda and sand blasting tomorrow (sat) as long as the weather cooperates.  We also got our order of parts in earlier in the week...

When we went to loosen the clamping bolt on the right fork on the top triple tree it just cracked in half with barely touching it.  Good thing that bike had a flat front tire and we didnt do anything stupid like try and ride the thing around before we tore it down.  So we are in the market for a stock triple tree at the moment to keep costs down as we are going to need new forks etc etc.  Im thinking of getting the bike back together and up and running and just running clubmans, ride it around and then if we want to put more money into it get the billet triple tree and the clip ons as its really not hard to put on the bike.

Tried to avoid spending $5 on getting the tyre taken off an old rim that is going in for re-chroming, so I went to the local bike shop and ended up spending $45 on tyre levers and rim protectors that didnt work  :o So ended up having to take tyre levers back and spend the $5 in any case.

Cost in the end - $5 for tyre removal, $10 for screwed up rim protectors, $5 petrol  ::) Oh well, just another gem to add to the "experience" files *sigh*
I'd spend $5.00 all day long to get old tires safely off the rims but nobody around here will do it unless you buy tires there. Some of those rock hard old Dunlops can be a real pain. New ones go on pretty easy though.

I fired up my cb750 after tearing the top end apart - did a full valve job for the first time.

The bike fired up, sounded a bit sluggish so I grabbed a handful of throttle and BANGGG!!!!!! I killed it immediately, thinking I screwed something up in the motor.  :'(

Upon closer inspection, the bang came from my right baffle getting blown straight out the back of my pipe and into a snowbank a few meters behind  :o The weld holding the baffles in had broken last season but the baffle was held tight regardless, or so I thought!

The bike continued to run after that, though the right side sounds considerably more badass than the left now... I guess it's time for a new exhaust already.

If the baffel is still in good shape you can buy new packing to re-wrap it.  Then just drill out the weld spot and rivet it back in place.

Get a baffle online or something like that and use 2 sheet metal screws to hold it in place. Clean and simple

Put on my new front tire and went for a rip, then built me a carb synch tool out of powerade bottles.  It run pretty well, but I want perfection!

Today I got a safety certificate from a garage, the next step to getting this bike on the road this spring. Switching over insurance from the BMW to the Honda, and a new plate, and I'll be good to go.

Going to be heading down to Bloomington IN in a bit to finish putting together my oldest sons 750. I hope it fires up with no drama so I can get back home and rest, it's been a long week so wish me luck.

Amen to that, turns out that when my dad took the tyre through to the bike shop, it took four guys and that tyre machine and a ton of swearing to get that tyre off - that old bastard really did not wanna go!

I put on my new carb set, plumed all the lines, timed my Dyna ignition, adjusted the clutch cable, rear brake and had her fired up for the first time in months.  Now all I need to do is change the fork seals and polish up some stuff.

Thanks for the complement.  Yeah, rear drum only, trying to keep it looking old and clean.  It's really only for riding around the neighborhood and such.  I'm building a 1976 GL1000 cafe style that will have all the goodies like gauges, signals and disk brakes.

Even if you just run around the neighborhood a car, child or a drunk grandfather ;) could run out in front of you. And IMO it's crazy dangerous. You do what you do with your life, but last year we had a guy killing a 10-year old girl when he was driving a motorcross a littlebit to fast - front wheel lifted a little - no front brakes - boom... you never know ! Stay safe  8)

Turned this

Into this

Fab'd up a new hinge while I was at it.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Not Honda but went to look at a bike early this afternoon. Owner was extremely cool on significantly dropping the price to a real bargain level when He found out we had mutual friends from our other businesses. Small world. 1971 Suzuki T250 Hustler showing 7,000 miles.Might be another project sometime in the future or if I get lucky maybe find its big brother a T500. At least is was small enough to leave the gas guzzler truck and trailer at home.

Stripped the tank on the basket case. Found another gift from an PO or perhaps the last PO. Someone cut off the petcock. Just for the hell of it I mocked up some paint on the tank and the damaged frame.
