Nothing. I'd intended to do an oil and filter change on the FJ1200 and install a spin on filter kit, replace the front discs and pads and brake fluid, replace the foopeg rubbers, install some custom handlebar risers, and replace the seat cover.

The wife mentioned that the lawn needed mowing, so I quickly did the front lawn and the footpath (sidewalk in Macaroon?) and as my son's car (which is parked in our backyard) wouldn't start I connected the battery charger and went back to wrenching on the big Yamaha until I could move the car.

I put the bike up on it's centre stand and as I did, I felt a disc in my back slip out, and all of a sudden I couldn't stand up straight. Fcuking great. I staggered back inside, took a handfull of pain killers and had a hot shower, and now I'm sitting here feeling sorry for myself, which I always enjoy. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Sorry to hear dude, I have a bad back as well, been in and out of therapy all year, but doing better now. Only thing I can recommend from my own slippery discs and back spasms is that keep stretching your hamstring and calf muscles as much as possible and once you feel well enough, gently move around to keep the back from getting worse. Painkillers will block out your pain receptors, I'd recommend seeing a doctor and getting some kind of a mild muscle relaxant to help you recover.

My biggest fear with the beast I'm resurrecting is precisely this, getting it on the center stand, but thanks to these forums, I saw that MCRider had chopped of about an inch on the center stand to be able to pull it easier, which is exactly what I have in mind for mine.

Even with that mod, I'd recommend everybody here that you consciously use your legs, core and tighten your abs so as to not over stress or torque your lower back when pulling bikes on center stands.

Split the cases to examine the mains and transmission since I had to fix an upper oil leak between 2 and 3. Cleaned the 1094 off the mating surfaces and ultra sound cleaned the pistons and rings. Will start the reassembly tomorrow with a copper base gasket and a new head assembly. Just trying a few different configurations for fun and excitement.

Do not pull up but rather raise your body up and let the body weight come down on the center stand while lifting the rear with your right arm.  A 750 is one of the easiest bikes in stock form to raise onto the center stand after one is shown the correct technique...Larry

Well Terry with me mutilating my tongue the other day during breakfast and now you throwing you back out centerstanding your bike what else is going to happen to someone here :( I feel you pain friend, been there done that more times then I like to think about. I'm 56 and I try to go to a chiropractor once a month for decompression on my neck and adjustments on my lower back. This keeps me in pretty good shape. Beats going under the knife that's for sure ;) Knock on wood, but it's been a while sense I've wrenched my back and it had nothing to do with lifting anything heavy and in my case that is how it is most of the time. The last time it happened I had just stepped out of my truck and was walking to the house when I very casually lifted my right leg up a little higher while still walking to pull up my sock and I felt the twinge in my lower back and I knew right off what I had done >:( For the next week I couldn't straighten up completely and it wasn't easy sitting down and getting back up. Soaking in a tub of hot water and epsom salt seems to help me and also I go out in my garage after doing this and grab a overhead bar with boths hands that's high enough to where my feet want touch the floor and just hang straight down until my grip gets tired. Rest and do it again several times and this really seems to help me stretch out my lower back.

Thanks guys, I'm not worried about the pain (I'm incredibly tough, as everyone knows........) I'm just pissed off that I wasted a day sitting around because I couldn't do anything else.

I've just received a Department of Veteran's Affairs (DVA) "White Card" which I can use for any medical treatment, drugs etc. For the last 7 years I've had regular physiotherapy which consisted of a back massage from a pretty young Vietnamese princess, but she's taken the year off (had a baby) so I've been surviving all year on pain killers.

I just sent all my receipts for the past year into the DVA, the total was over $1200. I'm surprised that I don't rattle when I walk............. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Those back problems like Hall mentioned  can happen at strange times. My wife's back goes out sometimes. She has had two good ones this summer. One happened when she turned and pulled one of the goofy pink plastic flamingos out of the ground to move to another location. The other doozy was when she got her foot caught in her sweatpants while putting them on.

Back issues suck. I am 32 and was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis when I was 25. I too can feel the disk shift when I move wrong. Strength isn't what it once was but then again I never had the Hulk strength.  I am somewhat better when my back is lurched over but when I straighten that's when I can feel the vertebrae on vertebrae grinding.

Put my bike to bed for the forseeable future. Due to financial circumstances I can't afford to put fuel in it ffs!

Wrestled with my kickstart spring and sprocket for 15 minutes putting it in my lower case. No luck until I employed my vicegrips and snugged it right in.  Easy.

I had the same issue last weekend mate, I'm rebuilding 2 CB750 engines ATM, and as my cases were already blasted and ready to go, I used the other engine that I'm stripping as a guide, which was fantastic, I had the whole transmission back in my cases in under 30 minutes.

There is a real technique involved in setting the kick starter spring and gear into the cases and then installing the shaft, but being able to look at the other engine's transmission made it easy. The other engine was in terrible shape, ruined crank and rods, shot bearings, bits of clutch plate in the sump pan etc, but what made me laugh was that the roll pin that holds the kick starter shaft in place was missing completely?

I'm guessing this engine died close to it's first start up after a dodgy "rebuild", so it was never tested, but if anyone had tried to kick start it, the shaft would have come out of the cases, and if the engine was running at the time, all hell would have broken loose inside. Some people shouldn't be allowed to own tools......... ;D

Rode across town on my K6 today to meet up with Travis at his house. A very nice young man, only 24 years old. Makes me feel old, my two sons are older then he is ;D It's great when these young guys like him are interested in these old sohc4 Honda's instead of the  crotch rocket type bikes. His K6 is his first motorcycle ever and he is eager to learn and to work on this bike himself to get it road ready. I told him I would be glad to give him a hand with it when I could.

Rigged up this nice sturdy new workbench to work on the engine. Some store credit, no work weekend and a beautiful afternoon = one badass workbench. Best part is, I had no help and it somehow lined up all square ;)

That looks great Ed, it looks almost identical to my first bench, if you've got enough timber turn that bottom rail into a shelf so you can store stuff up off the ground. Cheers, Terry. ;D

GREAT idea! I bought treated lumber for the frame to burn up some store credit I had, the top sheet was from my father-in-law, and I'm sure he'll have some more that I can use to add the shelf. Thanks for the tip!

I prepped the garage for my dad to help me mount the cylinders.

Then he left for the mainland for a week. Didn't hear a thing about it.

Can I put the cylinders on myself? I have hose clamps acting as ring compressors. I was going to do 2-3 first, then rotate the crank and do 1-4.

Terry...once I had my technique set, it really only took 15 seconds.  I was half tempted to remove that split pin again and have my kid take a vid of the process I used, but then I got smart, and left it alone  ;D

To quote your Hawaiian President mate, "Yes You Can". get a couple of nice clean blocks of pine or similar softwood and place them between the crankcase and the two middle pistons so you don't just push the pistons back into the block, and using the hose clamps (loosely) as ring compressors, slowly push the cylinder block over the two middle pistons.

Once all the rings are compressed into the cylinders (don't forget a little oil or WD40 in each cylinder to help everything slide right in) carefully remove the clamps and blocks, rotate the crank so that the two outside pistons are up as high as they'll go without the two middle pistons coming back out, and repeat. Zimple! ;D
