You can ride it as is. I would say go easy on it just because you know the tubes are missing but realistically it only starts to matter more as you push it. Up and down, 'normal' riding won't really matter much at all. Get it repaired and get a head start on the awesome frame kit while you can
The dirty girl-1976 cb750k, Ebay 836, Tracy bodykit
Round top carbs w/ 38 pilots, middle needle position, airscrew 7/8ths out, 122 main jet
Stock airbox w/ drop in K&N, Hooker 4-1

Don't trust me alone with a claw hammer and some pliers

Yep, the time will come when you will be glad you put the frame kit in and didn't just weld tubes back in that's for sure.

'Twas a beautiful day here today, so I fired up all 5 running bikes and rode them outta the garage (and pushed the XR500 out) so I could make some room to do some repairs on the K2 frame before I get it powdercoated.

This was a "fix" on the sidestand braket done by a PO. Lord knows how he managed to damage it so badly, (I've never seen one this bad before) but his bodged "repair was just vile.

I lopped one off another frame and welded it in, and once I sanded off the spatter, it was as good as new!

All ready for powdercoating!

I was suitably chuffed, so went for a ride, then tucked them all away until next weekend! Cheers, Terry.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Been working on my K4 the last month or so and today I got the front end back on.
New springs, tapered bearings, fork seals, oil, polished lowers and caliper [thanks Ryan]. Also replaced the fork ears and wired up some new controls.

The front wheel was not left out, it received a polished hub, speedo drive, new bearings and stainless spokes....

I have the rotor taped up and ready for some VHT semi gloss paint, but that will be saved for another day, it's raining in my paint booth today!

Spent all yesterday in my father in law's garage... got a lot done thanks to his chain hoist!

  • removed fork tubes
  • removed accordion boots and replaced with single dust boot
  • removed removed stock headlight ears and replaced with black ones, and mounted new smaller blinkers to hold the bucket. After removing, I noted a buttload of pitting at the top of the tubes. Not a priority now, but next winter will be a fork rebuild which will include progressive springs and new top tubes.
  • Installed a '72 Euro bar and reinstalled all hand controls
  • re-routed wiring to where it is supposed to be along the top of the three top-tubes
  • reinstalled fork tubes at stock height.
  • straightened kickstand for now-stock height bike.

Now I just have a few more things left to do, including a 3K tuneup before riding. Bike will be coming to my garage next weekend, so things should go pretty quick.

Left to do...

  • Re-wire the rat's nest
  • Paint headers, install exhaust
  • mount Lucas tail light
  • remove the rear lowering blocks
  • replace upper shock bushings
  • shorten chain and re-align wheel
  • fork clamp spacers
  • get shorter top brake line because of lower bars

I'm going to start a build thread of my own...

Fired up three bikes today, the fourth has a dead cell in the battery.

The '72 K2 fired (and stayed running) on the first kick with the key on, after having not run since late October.   ;D

All the best,

Shane

Charged up last year's battery in a 500 , fired right up. Ran it around town for a bit ,while stopping for coffee i thought "Gee that thing could use a wash", so I took it to the carwash, got too much water pressure somewhere, no fire , pushed it home, lost my checkbook on the way. 5 mins. after getting it home it fires up. Nice. Then a woman down the street calls to tell me she has my checkbook. Really nice.
All in all it was good day, got to ride, got some exercise, and got my checkbook back.

Wrestled with a stock style k/n air filter, to get it to fit in the air cleaner box and
sit flat. The rubber around the element's perimeter has gotten hard and shrunken to the point
that it wont fit over/around the inside triangular "frame" that locates and centers the
element in the air box. I have other rubber components that have degraded from
hardening as well. I wonder if its caused from ethanol in the fuel. They are aged tho, so can't rule that out either.

Would it be possible for the airbox to have shrunk slightly? I find my airbox halves don't seal all the way around, even with a new seal on there. Brand new air filter, too.

Ha ha, what's that saying mate? If you remember the 1970's, you weren't there!

I know what you're saying though, I had a friend who dropped 8 acid pills then rode his Suzy GT750 the 180 miles from Melbourne to my home town stoned off his gourd. I haven't seen him since the 1970's, I wonder if he's still alive? ;D

Late response.......I guess it might be possible? maybe that's how the plastic reacts to heat and old age? Ethanol "poisoning?"

Not much yet. Will be mocking up the engine mounting bolts and brackets on both the frame and the engine.

I did pull out my swingarm, wipe it off, and took a few pictures.
