repaired my 77 matic after a small electrical fire under the left side cover.sure am glad i never throw out stuff as i had everything in the junk wiring milk crate

For those with leaking tachometer seals

I put a few wraps of PTFE tape on the end of the tach cable.

Now that sounds like a better idea- sold!  -what if the leak it between the tacho drive and the engine though?

I'm talking about the end of the cable that attaches to the engine.

I cut the end off a cable to make a plug since I use an electronic tach.

My bike wouldn't start yesterday.... OH NO A GREMLIN!!!


Took my tank off, started jiggling wires... IT CAME BACK ON. WOOHOO! Got me home...

Inspection (further jiggling of wires) this morning before big Ride for Dad event (you can still donate here) found that the switched power wire for my electronic speedo had come a bit loose! Fuxed her up good, and threw some electrical tape on there for good measure, too. All working fine now!

actually something I did nearly a year ago- scored a set of used oem carb boot clamps and popped them into a jar of fuel/kero mix, covered it and left them to soak for a while....
Today I finally pulled them out and to my dismay some of the fuel has devolved into a thick white powder crust all over the clamps arrrrrgh the opposite of the intended effect!

finish looks good but IMO the knee dents are throwing it off. You can see the unevenness of the hammer marks.

Yeah it's pretty rugged. I used a mallet from Eastwood. The metal jumped on me and made a dent in a place I didn't want. After I got the dent out, I didn't want to touch it anymore. Idk how people get them looking so clean?

Yes. You'll need to scuff the powder coat though in order for the filler to adhere. Then cover it with primer, then paint.

 
Yeah it's too late, I am afraid I'll mess it up. Next time.

Took the 550 to the Vintage races, put about 100 miles on it.  The new 4-1 sounds great, goes perfect with the induction whoosh from the stacks & filter.

Rode it !!  Finally got with my Son Saturday who has been traveling and working on the road a lot. Tossed him the key to The Kaw 900 and we rode all afternoon all over the place. Even did some fun two tracking in the dirt deep through the woods in a State Game area, had to see one of our favorite little hidden bass lakes. Think I better look for a couple of enduro's next    Picked up his girlfriend towards evening and gave here a nice long ride also.  Fun day with my 'little' boy !!
  Sad part though as we were leaving the State Game area a road was closed and talked to a fireman before turning around. A biker and his female passenger had just crashed severely trying to avoid a deer. Meat wagons were just showing up. Nothing on the news yet but was told it was grim.

He may have to wail till I'm dead !!  He's been a very good Son, I am lucky so there is always a key for something around here for him when he gets the time.  The old song "Cats in the cradle"  starts to ring true as you start getting older.

I had to use the set earlier than planned when my other set in Freedom Green metallic caused a stop almost direct after I had derusted the tank. All rust flakes removed but a very thin powder like material clogged the petcock mesh and even the carbs. I had to call a friend that fetched me with his car and a wagon after it. Flushed carbs thru the pilot fuel screws.

This was the start of a negative domino effect. I removed the float bowls of my Mikuni TMR carbs to check if they were dirty. I damaged some of the gaskets at assembly. Huge fuel leak. The gaskets are more like thin o-rings in a funny shape to be fitted in a groove. I was able to make it good despite damaged o-rings. I have ordered new ones from Netherlands, the only place I found selling it to the TMR32's

Then the fuel screws. I had an idea about more parts then only the needle and spring. Yes, I found thin washers and small o-rings on the floor later on Today good again with ALL parts, no fuel leaks (yet) and engine running smooth with good idle.

I need to drain the fuel from the green tank and filter it before use. Let the tank dry and blow it with high pressure and maybe vacuum clean it too.

I planned to use my 4-4 no numbers with the blue tank.

Worked on the 750/Liter Hot Rod.

Knocked out the wheel bearing on my new-to-me set of Lesters. Going to order All balls sets today. 

Cleaned the Lesters

Picked up my crank. Had the journals polished and the oil passage stopper balls replaced with grub screws. $75. Not bad.

Measured the crank journals and ordered a few bearings and couple other things from Yamiya. $6 each. Less than half what they cost state-side plus shipping is cheaper and I will get them quicker.

Blasted and painted my cam chain tensioner and cleaned up the shaft so that it will now slide smoothly.

Had my 087A carbs off the 550 for cleaning the first time (since I took possession last December). No huge surprises, however, I noticed the small holes in the emulsion tubes were sized differently across the 4 carbs. This can't be normal, right? Anybody have a source for these?

Plastigauged then installed my Crower rods using yellow bearings all across. All between .025 and .038 clearance. Torqued to 30 ftlb. Chased all the threads in both case halves then got out the APE crank stud set and placed them. Still need to torque. Gathered up most of the hardware to put the cases together. Got the Yamiya order placed so I'll kick back on the engine and wait for the order to arrive. Maybe do some frame work next and check with my powder coater about getting the Lesters done.
