Jerry, get Perilli Angel GT's. I recently had a set installed on my VFR. The best, stickiest, smoothest tire for all types of riding.
yup, got Pirelli Sport Demons on my VF500 and they are really good tires

Have them on my VF700S, great tire for the money....Larry

Great recommendations guys. Thanks.

Didn't get a whole lot done today. Buzz got my sprocket to me right in the middle of some yard work. Rearranging some bushes out front. Sore back. Hot tub coming up with some gin and tonic!

Decided I needed a bush break (yeah, not that kind unfortunately) so I opened up the Dynoman package and set to work cause I know Terry is concerned about the rocker issue.

We have cam! DP/RC315. Damn, it has huge lobes (the cam)!    ;D

HOPING to degree it tomorrow. My electrician didn't show up today so IF he shows up tomorrow that'll take precedence but it's just a planning session. More cam action and bush action. Hoping the welder calls too.

Picked up new wheel and steering bearings, and new gloves and visor. Got the cush drive rubbers, O-ring, and locking washers for the rear wheel too, on Tuesday.

Now I can do all my wheel/sprocket/chain work. Just need to find the time...

Well, ordered the sprocket and chain.

Got a kicker shaft and lever coming from a member from another forum.

Still waiting for the wire harness, too.

Played with the kicker I have currently, and got it running again......played with the carb needles......think I screwed it up more.

Got it to idle on it's own. But, not sure if it's right or not, gotta wait till the stuff comes in, so I can ride it.

Don't want to let it idle too, too long. Don't want to overheat it.

With newly rebuilt engine, don't want to over throttle it either. So, guess I still have a ways to go.

Darn little thing bite me too. All these bikes I have and never have been burned by the exhaust, but this little booger got me.

Damit man......that hurts.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

I didn't accomplish much at all today.  :(  however I'm with you on the wheel thing!

Went out to the garage all enthused today only to shot down by a 40 year old bike. 2 steps forward 1 back and sometimes 1 step forward 2 back. I'm all over the cam degreeing (I'm thinking). Install my quirky points shaft to mount my degree wheel to. It's being a PITA but it's in. Get out my APE TDC stop and figure out exact TDC. I'm in. Has anyone ever tried reading cam degreeing instructions especially only doing it a few times in your lifetime?! Has anyone installed a Webcam?! In this case a Dynoman RC315. WTF?! Turns out apparently that damn Webcam 'notch' is 180 off from everyone else's. WTH? Why are the pistons and valves hitting! has anyone tried to use our mostly worthless search function! I finally figured this out when I broke out a stock cam. I'd been pissed except for the fact that I to take all the cam stuff off anyway WHEN I FIGURED OUT I HAD ONLY INSTALLED 2 OF THE OIL ORIFICE O-RINGS INSTEAD OF 4. LMAO on that one but at least I caught it. Now I'm stuck for a week and half waiting on 2 friggin o-rings. There's always my yard project and my basement project to fall back on but the electrician is MIA.

Anyway back to the wheels. I gathered up all the parts and I have complete sets so the wheels can move forward after a little blasting, wheeling, polishing and painting of some of the peripheral parts. Can't complete the rear until the coating is done on the sprocket carrier anyway. Where's my frame?! Whats this long weekend #$%* when there are bikes to be built! Damn, I hate yard work. Soooo boring...... Guess I can install the tapered steering head bearings in the mean time and take inventory of brake parts.

Hurry up and wait, the story of owning a SOHC4....  :)

Cleaned my air box and inspected and re-installed my valve cover replacing the bolts with shiny new ones.

By the time I finished it was too hot to do the valve adjustments, have to wait until the morning for that.

Took the 550 for a spin to my Mom's place for a BBQ. My brother has been using it and has put over 500 miles on it the past few weeks. Funny part is he drained the battery by putting the ignition in the park position. I had to pick him up from downtown. The real funny part is I was watching him trying to bump start it with a completely drained battery.  After watching him run and hop on the bike a few times I had to stop him. I got a few laughs but he was drenched in sweat.

It wasn't today, it was last Friday, couldn't talk about it til now.  I thought the kickstand was up when I pushed a 500 with a refinished/ sealed tank up on the lift so's to change out a leaky oil pan gasket ....front wheel went up nice, kick stand hit the ramp and over she went onto a nearby Yamaha parts bike... I'll be doing some body work to the tank this week.
I don't know if I can get over the stupidity, but I am past being angry with myself and ready to move forward with the tank.
It's all fun and games, and I may find  I'll like the new paint job better  than the last.

Made a lifting bracket, Helicoiled a cam tower thread and replaced the cam chain slider.

Using my new lifting bracket to take the engine out again after running it but not seeing oil flow on the 1-2 cam

Had it out, blocked oil jet. Happened on startup, was clean when it went in.
Engine back in, carbs and exhaust to go.
Had this thing 20 years before I had to take the  engine out, 5 times in two years now.
Once for chains and tensioners, valve seals and rings, second for leaks and retorque. Third for a low mileage primary drive sprocket, fourth for the slider that I missed the first time, and fifth for the oil jet.
I'll see in an hour or two if I'm doing a sixth.

Installed my front wheel bearings. This post is a summed-up version of the post in my build thread... Check it out for more photos, in more detail, etc... http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=136061.0

Pretty straightforward process... But that axle bolt is a BASTARD! Could't find a deep enough socket to turn it off, because of the lip at the end, so I went with two wrenches. The axle nut is 23mm... an odd size. 7/8" is the equivalent SAE size! The two flat areas on the other end of the axle is 18mm. I let it soak in PB Blaster for awhile, then heated it up for about 30 secs and pressed down on both wrenches at the same time. POP. Off it came.

Following przjohn's method (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,149230.msg1702391.html#msg1702391), I popped out my bearings. Didn't need to heat the hub, either. Just a nice big punch, and a screwdriver jammed in there, a few taps with the 5lb mallet, and POPPED right out.

The bearings. Originals! No previously-drilled out stakes on the retaining ring!

Then put your retaining ring back on. But first you'll want to clean up those threads. They are pretty soft metal, so easily done! The thread pitch for the retaining ring on the front wheel is 1.5mm, the same as an M10 bolt. Luckily that is the same as the oil drain plug. I just changed mine so I had the old one kicking around. Run that bolt with plenty of pressure around the retaining ring, and also on the hub inner threads. Any spots that are especially warped, like on mine where I used a punch to turn it out, and where the original stakes were drilled out, use a small jeweler's file to get rid of the big chunks, then the M10 to reshape.

NOW AN IMPORTANT PART.

How I found the magical "Just RightTM" position for this floating bearing is that it should be tight enough so that the spacer doesn't move side to side (remember wheel in normal, riding position... up or down is OK), BUT you should be able to spin both bearings freely, in opposite directions, at the same time, independently of the spacer. You may find you can feel the inner race rub ever so slightly on the spacer at this point. It takes a bit of feeling around (use your pinky's, those are small holes!)... but you'll get it.

If you do make it too tight the first time around, GENTLY tap from the retainer side on the INNER RACES. GENTLY GOING SLOWLY, ALL THE WAY AROUND. Eventually you will get the floating bearing moved outwards a bit, and then you can try again. Ask me how I know... I thought I was done for, when I did it too tight... but I went and checked HondaMan's book, and this is what was recommended.

Then reassemble everything! Change the seals if they were included, and grease where necessary. Disk brake bolts are M8, so they were tightened to 15#, in a cross pattern, and then the lock washers bent up again. I should get new ones. Front axle is supposed to get fairly high torque, but finding a socket that actually fits is going to be near impossible. I used those two wrenches again and tightened to gudentight (all my 170lbs pushing on them). Fork axle holder is installed with the gap to the rear, front bolt tightened first (15#, again), and then the rear to the same torque.

I rode the bike this morning, and I found that the bike rolled much better when backing out of the garage.

Rear wheel bearings, cush drive rubbers, and spockets and chain are for next time!

Well I hope it is mate, I think mine is an Andrews, it is the same profile as the OEM K1 cam, except it has around 2mm more lift, and it works very well with standard cam timing. Good score! ;D

I mounted some sweet race rubber on my new heavy duty rear wheel, and scratched my head as to how I'll fit these new expansion chambers to my twin engined bicycle. It's the wife's 54th birthday tomorrow, (it's my Triumph Rocket III's 8th birthday too, and I'm not sure which one I love the most.........) so no work on the bikes, but Thursday's another day...... ;D

It would be perfect if it is the D profile. The A will be a good cam for another project with less modifications.
