Is that 3 potatoes or 4? Will it make it miss on one cylinder? I'm confused, cos I want to be the first kid on my block with a 4 cylinder Harley! ;D

It's a "Big Bang" cam configuration. Basically the paired cylinders fire on the same spark. So instead of the nice smooth bang-bang-bang-bang we all know & love, you get BANG-BANG-rest-rest.  If you wana try it before you buy it, Terry, re-time one cam on ur Mighty Wang by 180* and you'll have an 800 pound hill climber!

Fcuk it, now I want a "Big Bang cam"! Hey hotty, can you make me one? ;D
Sorry uncle tez... the xs650 can can be chopped, indexed and pinned like this as its the centre hub of the cam and there's allowable room for the dowel pins and retaining screws...something you just couldn't do mid-way along a sohc/4 cam as there's just not enough "meat" on the Cam and no flange for the bolts.

The only way would be to get a custom Cam built up and then RE- ground to suit you intended use.

Or get the Cam parted off, sleeved and then welded. But alignment would be a nightmare......

=$$$

Thanks mate, I wondered if you could part it at the cam sprocket flange with one of those super thin 4 inch angle grinder discs while set up in your lathe, then weld the sucker back together with a screw in each screw hole, thus making it a perfect 180 degree rotation? I've got a few old cams at home, maybe I could give it a try? Cheers, Terry. ;D
Tez, parting off is the easy part. A supplier for xs650 cams in the u.s. does part them off and sleeve + weld as I've mentioned, mid Cam (so not at the flange).
Parting, boring, sleeving is all pretty straight foward machining. Getting someone to weld up the cast without it pulling is the tricky part, as well as having to cool it down super slow in a medium to lessen cracking etc....

You would still have to index it prior to cutting to allow for dowel pins to be inserted as per my xs Cam. Two 3 hole patterns and then rotate, press together over sleeve (size/size fit) and then weld, with some sort of fixture.

Have my K2 on eBay/gumtree at the moment also, if it sells I'll be offloading K0 if still interested....

Ciao

Yes mate, definitely interested in the K0, pm me with how much you'd like for it, or maybe a trade? Cheers, Terry.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

its a nice russian stranko .. a  presision machine.even better then many European made machines..and cost the half
.some of the best from russia..have heigh speed on all direktions..just pull a handel ,,and it speed up..on the board movings..and up /Down..can turn/tilt the head in 2 diraktions.( it have its ovn engine)
.and use the direkt drive spindel. (iso 45).it have a bigger engine for big cuttings heads..only problem is the relative lov height of the board..up to the Tool spindel..can not take  big clunks like car engines..they have to be tilted to cut them from the side..hard to montage them presise in 45 deg..
i have a idea to undercut gear..use a grinder stone..it can be done perfekt on this machine

I bought some air box intake boots for my cb750k4

To replace the old ones that the flared side opening warped like hell and look more like PAC-MAN than a nice round opening.
My toolbox consists mainly of hammers.

Lets see...

1) Degreased, painted, and cleared my oil tank
2) Cleaned up oil line fittings
3) Installed PAMCO electronic ignition
4) Cleaned and painted battery tray and re-installed
5) Removed corrosion from battery on bolts and sections of frame
6) Removed a lot of excess duct tape
7) Touched up and painted frame
8] Installed new head to carb insulator from vintagecb750
9) Broke a black insulator clamp from vintage cb750
10) Cleaned up carbs and cleaned up accelerator pump and re-mounted carbs
11) Cleaned up and re-attached negative battery cable to bike
12) Cleaned up cam chain tensioner

I test fitted my new side covers and the oil tank fits perfect but I may have to tweak the electronic cover size as it is just a wee bit skewed for my liking.

I'm sure there was far more but that is what I can remember for now LOL.

All that in one day? Sheesh! All I got done was removed my carbs to replace the intake runner o-rings. While they were off, I decided to blast everything with carb cleaner and compressed air. Bench sync, install, test idle. Was too cold to warm up and vac sync. By that time the wife was calling.

Pretty much. And come to think of it I dropped the old crappy oil too while I was it and pulled what appeared to be a oil filter? Of how old I have no idea... And then finished up with cleaning up the front oil filter cover.

I have been hard at work as I'm trying to get the bike ready for a show May 7th and maybe pushing my luck lol!

^^^^ looking good ^^^^

you may want to use SS for the adjuster too.  Here is a handy table:

How about SS thumb nut with shoulder, like this one here:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#thumb-screw-nuts/=11v1jip

and use round file to make it fit?

Thanks, plan is to go SS for the whole thing, and that one comes pretty close. I wish they had them in slightly longer length but this will definitely be a good fallback.

Interesting chart, I've seen a similar one before but didn't realize SS fasteners in our 750 aluminum cases don't pose a risk for GC (or am I reading it backwards??). I was planning on using SS fasteners with a zinc anti seize but will have to think it over.

Well the weather here has been great. I haven't driven my car in a couple of weeks, but rather, have ridden my bikes (the BMW R1100GS and Yamaha FJR1300) to work every day. For some reason i've been really keen to get out of bed each morning, not something that usually happens when I'm driving the car! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Solved my front tighten issue today. New front wheel bearings. The left one probably not completely seated. I banged hard on outer race, got it sit as I thought was the bottom. Measure same all around 8mm from hub edge to bearing outer race. Monted the collar and mounted the other bearing until the collar was tight between the bearings. The right bearing now deeper, not flush with hub, maybe 0.5-1mm more.

The front axle could not be tighten when the speedo gear locked. The bearing shop have shims with correct size, 15 x 22 x 1 mm. 0.5mm thick should do it too but not in stock.
Good to know when mounting bearings if adjustmenets need to be done

I replaced the forgotten oil seal inside the speedo gear too. Should be double lip seal with dimensions 34 x 48 x 7. Found 8mm thick one that I grinded to fit.

Rode in to work! A bit wet... but a nice early start to the riding season. Going to get some better rain gear (trousers) this year.

I notice my bike pulls harder through the entire throttle range now after doing the clear tube float check.

Still working on the XS650.
Things I've learned so far:
Fork oil seal clips and washers for 34mm forks are no longer available.
Choke shaft seals for BS38 carbs are no longer available from Yamaha.
Removing the lower bearing race from the triple tree is a hell of a lot easier than the CB750 was.
Installing tapered races in the neck is easier too.
Removing the rear wheel bearings is also super easy. (Where I found really dry, crunchy, scary bearings!)
Removing the front wheel bearings, not too bad.
Yamaha's black paint strips real easy.
The local bike shop will ding up the alloy rims removing 25+ year-old tires and then tell you never to come back again.
The Yamaha shop manual is pretty crappy compared to Honda manuals.
The new powder coater I went to will do a great job at a cheaper price than the last place I used.

And I'm sure there are more revelations to follow.  :D

I like the comment about the dealer and the rims. So true. Sometimes it might be easier to take a reciprocating saw to an old, hard tire and cut it off. Or cut it far enough in a few places that the bead relaxes and you can pry it off without hurting the rims.

Yeah, being a full-service dealer I kinda assumed  they had the proper tools for dismounting tires from alloy rims.
Apparently they don't and even worse don't know when not to do a job.
(And they were going to try to charge me for two hours labor as well! It was after I discussed it with the owner that I was dis-invited and left without being charged....)
Had I known I would have taken a saw and done it myself.
Oh well, just more polishing to do...
