No no. Of course I cleaned it first. I'm an airhead, not retarded. ...okay I might be a little retarded.

The droning sound at 5k came at freeway speed... okay, maybe a little over freeway speed. The chain had gone dry.
When the oil arrived I cleaned the chain, lubed it, wiped that off and lubed again. I haven't been riding since I oiled it so I don't know if I fixed it.

Next time I'm out flouting the law on the freeway though, I will be listening.

Tires can drone at freeway speeds...so best to check on a couple different road surfaces...when in doubt.

The chain may be worn, which will cause a bit more vibration.

The best chain lube I used came in a big round tin that you’d heat on the oven, and after cleaning your chain (kerosene was good back then) you’d sit your chain on top, and let it ease into the melted grease. Leave it there for awhile then carefully pull it out, wipe off the excess and hang on the clothesline until dry.

I loved that stuff (can’t remember the brand, it was English) but it worked great and could be used many times until you eventually ran out of grease. No “oil fling” all over your wheel and spokes etc, and really kept the chain and sprockets in “as new” condition. ;D   .
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I've still got such a big flat tin of grease, Quaker state in my case. Haven't used it anymore since I migrated to O-ring chains in the early eighties, but it worked great with the earlier chains!
Never got to the lifespan of O-rings though, on my CBR1000F I get over 40.000 km (25k miles) on a DID chain!

I rolled the CB750 "Nugget" into the enclosed trailer with the Dragster for a long winters nap. I was planning to do an exhaust swap but one of them needed to get stored due to space needs.

A little bit late, but Spotty and I spent a freezing Sunday working on my latest Triumph Rocket III that I bought a couple of weeks ago. The bike was in pretty good condition, but needed expensive new tyres, (about $1000 per set, AUD) brakes, a rubber throttle body insulator, a better seat, and an exhaust system that wouldn't fry my leg on a cold day.

Rocket III Sunday 22 October 2023 3 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

We raided my red Rocket for some parts because it's going the turbo path which is a longer term project, and I wanted to get the black one roadworthy ASAP. New Metzler tyres, great discs and pads, much wheel scrubbing, one fork leg was swapped out, as was the shift lever. Once we'd installed the new throttle body insulator we could finally install the "Ozclaw" air scoop that I bought for the red bike before deciding to turbo it. It looks better on the black bike anyway.

I couldn't get this old duffer off the bike, so made him ride it 10 miles in the cold and wet to park it in my storage unit, and I'm looking forward to a longer ride this coming weekend. ;D

When the Rocket 3 was first released in 2004 with a 240/50-R16 rear tyre (wider than the tyres on my turbo Subaru GT) Triumph had to have them specially made, by Metzler. The front is a 150/80-R17 which I think Harley may have been putting on their big cruisers by then, but unless you wanted to put car tyres on them (it’s common, called “Dark siding” and is kind of stupid, for obvious reasons) You don’t have much choice but to pony up the dough. Now Avon have come to the party (but for around the same money) as have Bridgestone. (a bit cheaper but N/A when I bought these tyres a couple of years ago during Covid)

Due to the weight of these bikes (around 800 pounds) and the huge torque of the 2300cc (or 2500cc in the post 2020 models) the rear tyres can last as little as 3000 miles, so people doing big miles on them (where they really shine as a “Power Cruiser”) are constantly replacing tyres, hence the temptation to put car tyres on the back, which of course are made in much larger numbers so a fraction of the price.

I was able to get 9000 miles out of my first set on my “In the family from new” 2007 Rocket 3, but they were pretty well buggered by then, and I only felt confident riding it on dry days. The second one I bought cheap had a car tyre on the back, and riding it 10 miles to the shop to have these tyres put on took 10 years off my life, it was “Dangerous at any speed”. With good (although expensive) tyres on one though, they actually handle pretty well for what they are. Brakes are another issue, while the Brembo brakes work very well to haul such a huge bike down from the insane speeds that they’re capable of, a set of discs and pads are shot after around 50,000 miles if regularly ridden in anger.

Spotty and I swapped them out from my red bike and we noticed that both the front and rear discs and pads from that bike had been changed, whereas the discs and pads on the black bike (with only 40,000 miles) were pretty bad. Luckily the discs and pads aren’t as ridiculously expensive as the tyres. (Unless you buy genuine Triumph/Brembo items of course)

As the red bike is a longer term project I’ll replace the brakes as the bike is closer to being finished, and eventually the tyres which are still ok for an occasional ride, but I wanted to make sure the black bike is Roadworthy both for my own personal safety, and to ensure it gets through its Roadworthy Inspection for registration. ;D

Terry very kindly finished the adaptor plate and drilled the bolt holes to size on my new disc , looks awesome and should work way better than the stock cast iron door stop it had stock, the caliper is a Braking Supermotard one, new line ( though I think I'll probably get a shorter one ) and a whole load of sexy

I put the Ebay K0 front tire and wheel assembly on the project K0, I got lucky to find it relatively cheap. I was going to put the early forks on it too but what I've read a late K0 should have the K1 type forks. It's got a 71 title anyway. I cut off the old tire and stored the K3 wheel.
Next up, more tire and wheel swapping.

Built the back wheel back up again on my small Honda.
I had completely disassembled it,then sent the rear hub out to a machinist who's affiliated with Michael Morse over at vintagebrake.com(Sonora,Ca.)who has done this procedure before;had the rear inner cast iron drum lining replaced, then installed new Ferodo shoes and new NTN bearings.
I spent some time with these two wheels(gradually and evenly increasing the spoke tension on every one, until I was satisfied)on my 'truing stand' and trued both it and the front wheel to where they're both laterally and radially True.   Happy Wheeling  :D

I was really lucky when I found a minty K0 front wheel and disc on Ebay USA advertised as a K3 front wheel for $80 USD back in around 2019, before I found the remains of a 1/70 K0 in Queensland in 2020, that became the basis of my Redneck K0 restoration. The back wheel needs the rim rechromed and new spokes so I’ve got a K1 rear wheel on it, but one day I’ll get the original wheel restored and install it. ;D

Last week I installed an Atlas throttle lock so I can take a break and rest my wrist on longer trips.

Today I added fuel stabilizer and rode around the neighbourhood to get the stabilized gas into and through the carbs.

Sadly, I think riding season is over here in Ontario.
