Built a sissy bar for the CB today.

Well I got started on my latest K6.
Started the Electrolysis cleaning of the tank that came on it, replaced sometime in the past after the 1st owner damaged the original tank. It was partially filled with old rusty gas from @ 2004.(I emptied it a few weeks ago and rinsed it with acetone and let it air out). I started it last night. This morning I decided it was time for a new electrode.
A couple more days and I'll rinse it out and do a day or 2 full of Evaporust. Then I'll rinse it well with 4 rinses of diesel fuel, then coat the insides with 2 stroke oil to preserve it.
Then it'll be off to my PDR guy along with a friend's tank to remove the dents from them.

Yes you don't want the electrode touching the tank. That's why the spray can top cut around the hinge and latch, double nutted and fender washers bolting the threaded rod to the cap and the tape to secure it solid.

The results speak for themselves.

I actually when saw this earlier I thought "why is John taking it apart again??" I saw the yellow lift....then I looked at the name....

Tell me about it. I was just going to pull the motor to fix a leak. Now the entire bike is in labeled boxes and *everything* is getting the anal-retentive Floshenbarnical treatment

This morning I decided to dump the washing soda/water mix from the tank, got a fair amount of rust chips out with the hose rinsing it out. Looks pretty good already but put another batch in and hooked it up again for another day or two.

Stu,how long will it take to get it nice and clean of rust if you used Evaporust and kept it about 110-120 degrees for 18 hrs. ?

I heated up some Evaporust to around 120 degrees(#1 on my stove control)and put some small rusty parts into the pot and they were rust-free in 2.5 hours;pitted,but rust-free.

Does it splash or let off a lot of odor? I'm assuming at that temperature it's not going to be near boiling point yet?.

It stays calm but you can see some activity/movement in the heated Evaporust.
The low heat I use is pre-simmer(climbs up to about 150-160 degrees max:no more)and super-charges the stuff to get very active;I put a pot cover over it to keep the heat in and keep it from evaporating too much

I imagine you would place a fuel tank filled with it in a very hot room,etc.? Or an industrial oven at the lowest setting.
