It's one of those things, knowing you were the last person there at the scene, can you leave it the way you found it?
We know the answer.

Well, quite. Do it once and do it right. I don't want to have to do this again. Getting that motor out was really annoying

Prepping the K6 frame. Scrape the guck off, soda blast then a good wash.

Cleaning up the gunk on some of these frame is a nightmare. I start by scrapping 30years of chain lube off. Then a saturated rag with mineral spirits or WD40. Then I spray brake cleaner through all the gussets that hold oil. Has to be pretty clean before powder coat.

This one will need to be painted. Like craz1, 30+ years of chain lube and dust from gravel roads. Cliff.

I added up the cost of wire wheels, sanding disks, rust killer, primer, paint and it was over 1/2 the cost of paying a local firm. They baked, sand blasted, cleaned, primed and powder coated my frame for under £200, incl. tax. I also had brackets, footpegs, battery box etc. done (swing arm was fine) all in for a total cost of £245 incl. Came back perfect. Took a month turn around and I didn't notice that, as I was working on the head and cylinders.

I'm not made of money, but this was so much easier, no mess in the workshop and better results than I would achieve. Excellent value for money.

Sorry to go off topic for a moment: I had to get 2nd hand replacement cyl head and valve cover, which had been mangled beyond repair with what looked like chisel grooves across the mating surfaces (one of my oil leaks). I paid £50 for the sheared front bolt to be removed from the cylinder barrel and a light hone. I also needed a new (used) rear hub, due to brake liner cracks and delamination (PO had new shoes with no miles on them). Carb rebuild kit, steering bearings/races) oil, plugs, gasket set, new cyl head cover bolts and engine hanger bolts. New screws for the exhaust manifolds. Clutch cable and tacho cable + seal. Engine paint. I reckon I spent £1500. Probably 200 hours over 2 months.

My bike is possibly worth £1500 more than I paid for it. So, 200 hours free labour!  :P

I used this one

with the pressure turned up. The book says it's good to 145 psi. And Arm & Hammer soda from the grocery store. Cliff.

Hey Cliff,

I tried sending you an email to the address I got from the BCCMC members list but it kicked back.  I tried sending you a PM also from the BCCMC forum.  That was a couple of weeks ago I guess.  Could you shoot me a PM?

Cheers,
Ross

I'm still waiting on the seat to come back from the upholstery fellow. He's a long time buddy doing y seat and my buddy's seat for his panhead.

He's adding some passenger foam and pleating mine. I'm pretty excited to get it back. Just waiting it's been about 2 weeks now. He's not the fastest but he does a great job and cheap too.
You only get 2 of the 3. Good and cheap makes me happy.

Yesterday I finished stripping my frame, wiped it down with acetone, let it dry, and then primed and painted it.

Great recommendations on the Duplicolor, folks. The proprietary nozzle on those cans makes it so easy to get good, consistent coverage, and the finish looks factory. Granted I'm a decent painter but still, quality product. Looking forwards to getting my swing arm painted later this week.

I then also had my friend's girlfriend (she's a power lifter) move my motor out of the garage and up three flights of stairs into my dining room. It's just too cold to work on it in the garage without feeling like I'm rushing, and I want to take my time and get it right. It's making a good side table next to my couch until I start working on it the next few days.

Guessing you are not married!  My wife would flip if I brought a motor in the house! [or a female power lifter!!]

Did you get some help to lift it off the floor for her;then she dead-lifted that heavy CB750 motor/trans off the bench and took it from there ?

Was a gorgeous day yesterday in Central Texas...sunny and 80 degrees.  Could not resist rolling the big Z1 out of the garage, have not ridden it yet this year.  Checked tires and fuel, all good, cranked a couple times and she fired right up!  Was a little disappointed to see a minor fuel leak from the carb, turned the petcock off and let it warm up, fuel back on and no leak. HATE ethanol fuel! Went for a great ride and when I got back, snapped this pic of the bike in front of my house with fresh asphalt on my street just laid earlier in the day.

When I did my rebuild, I replaced the tacho cable. The cable sleeve was longer than the one it replaced, so the exposed ends were shorter. I was assured by my supplier it was correct. It worked, but I noticed it didn't start working at initial start up, until I gave the bike some revs.

So, today I took it off, hacksaw 1/4" off the flared end (tacho end) and formed a new flare with needle-nosed pliers. Lightly re-greased the cable. Seems to have sorted it.

So we're both good deadlifters - mine is about 360lbs and hers is about 330lbs. The weight isnt the issue, right. It's the weight distribution and the fact there isnt much to grip onto underneath (dont want to apply shear force to the covers). The stupid thing constantly wants to tip forwards. But we humped it up the front steps (three storeys!) and now we're all set.

She is good friends with my girlfriend. They workout together sometimes.

We figured out a solution though. When it's upside down I'll modify two long 2x4s so the mounting bolts can be used to secure the motor to them. Then we'll lift the whole thing like we're footmen transporting a nobleman on a litter carriage and it'll be a lot easier

I like the long 2x4 handles for two individuals;should work well.
