... but did take custody of this wicked '71 CB500 today.

Very Jealous!  Where'd ya find that??

Do you still have your 550, I sold you a set of pipes?

Hi Stev-o! found this bike in New Braunfels, I fired up Craigslist one afternoon and there it was - the listing was already 12 days old by the time I saw it. I think it would have disappeared much quicker had it been listed on Marketplace instead, but glad it stuck around so I had a chance at it.

I ended up selling that other 550 back in 2021 (wow time flies). it looked sharp with your pipes, but I had to make some space - that was a fun project! Bike was left for dead in someone's backyard, I picked it up with title for free - also was a CL score. here's how it ended up if I never shared it

The engine and pipes look excellent/Clean and shining on it.
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts'
I love the small ones too !

This afternoon I awoke the K5 from its winter nap.
I aired up the tires with fresh spring air, checked the oil level(I had changed the oil after the last ride on 12/2/25), then I drained out the @ 5 oz of 2 stroke oil from the gas tank(winter storage coating after draining and rinsing the tank with diesel fuel), then put in 3 gallons of fresh non ethanol gas and turned on the petcock to fill the emptied carbs, cranked the starter a few times until the oil light went off, put the kill switch on and choked it. It fired up right away nice and smooth.
Then rode it around the neighborhood for 15 minutes to warm it up slowly and warm the chain to put on chain lube.
This was after my delivery from Mike Reick of my Billet Block and 72mm pistons.  An exciting day was had.

Today I synchronised my 400/4 carbs, the bike is in a completely knocked down state to rebuild back to as it was 47 years back when it was new and I was young. The English weather is none to kind to most things especially Alloy, chrome and paint over the years so the rebuild is going to be quite some time. The cards were Ina bad way when I took them off but I have been able to get them back into good order even though I had to learn about rust removal through electrolysis, Then plating and passivation of parts. So today was easy compared to the last two weeks.

Welcome aboard the forum Andy

I had to look up what passivation is..... that's a good 50 cent word for bike nights

Yeah I got mine out of storage a couple weeks ago, prepped it and it fired right up and ran great.

Replaced shocks, added dual disc and original style seat over the last two weekends.

Getting there with it, just give us some consistent weather.

I suspect the shoes are way worn - yet it somehow stops, but it needs sorting from head to tail - front brakes/fork seals etc. this bike has been off the road since 1983. wish I could find more info on these race wins, river city road race happened in Austin - I'm unsure of the course specifics but it happened around Town Lake on the south side of downtown. Here's the Tracy catalog page I found online with matching body kit - on a 750 though. the 500/550 version came with side covers and brackets

It looks like the brake rod is too short, and the arm on the drum has been rotated on the splines to compensate? Is that a stock 500 brake pedal?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I shined up a heavily oxidized 750A dyno cover for use on my engine project. I also took inventory of spare parts I've been accumulating over the years.
The Rat Race got its dual front brakes rebuilt, the rubber seals seemed to be sticking to the pistons.

Don…. Somewhere I have a cb750A generator cover. Is it different than a regular one or are they interchangeable?

They are interchangeable, the A windings puts out a little more juice.
