I took my cam chain tensioner off my 76 CB750 thinking it might be froze up because prior adjustments didn't seem to do much on chain noise, but once removed other than being a little dirty tensioner seemed to be ok. So I clean it up some and oil it up good and reinstalled it and adjusted it by the specs.per this forum. But it still seems to be more chain rattle than I think it should be or like. Bike idles good around 1500 to 1600 rpms and pulling in clutch doesn't make any difference in rattle. Bike has 17000 miles so I wouldn't think chain or rollers would be wore out or need to be replaced. All in all bike runs very good.
I guess just  get use to the rattle as part of the 750's make up. Hope to ride about 100 miles today.

Are you setting the crank at 15deg after top dead center on 1-4 before making the adjustment?

it's all ready for the new valve cover gasket, main jets then putting the frame kit back in. which is good because i AM going to the show at Spartanburg H/D next saturday. if i have to do it with yamabond instead of a proper valve cover gasket i will.

Looks like the vent hose for the battery came loose last summer and caused some surface corrosion on the bottom of the battery box.  Had to pull that out today to clean and paint.

Replaced the drive chain with an o-ring chain.... That mystery wheel hop that came on at 44mph, and left at 48 mph(seemed to be a badly balanced front tire...) is now gone...  Who would have thought... One tighter than acceptable link in an otherwise "ok" chain was the culprit.

I also removed the swingarm and cleaned everything, then bored the swingarm bolt for 1/4-28 grease fittings.  The bike has 8600 miles, and I bet it was only greased in Japan!

Lastly, I shortened the clutch arm inside the clutch housing....  Take a 1/4" out of it, carefully "TIG" (GTAW for the technically estute) weld it back together, and re-bend it to the correct offset, and voila; nice quick shifts that engage with almost no "clunk", and let out just past halfway on the lever.  I am a happy man.  I will be making a model of the part for CNC laser cutting, and they will be available to the masses cheaply!  The modification does increase lever pressure a small amount, so I would not recommend it if you are running heavier springs.

Cheers,

Reassembled the bike. Had the tank, side covers, and front & rear fenders painted. I also painted the exhaust. Not sure if I like it painted, but it looked like hell with the rusty and "hole-e" pipes.

Still more to do and got to figure out what the heck is with that oil leak.

I stuck an LED tag light inside my headlight for a "running light"
we'll see how it goes...

it's white, but it lights up my blue bulb and looks all purple-blueish.

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my bike - here is the link to my photobucket account..

http://s870.photobucket.com/albums/ab262/81custom/?action=view&current=Image125.jpg

1975 CB750F (0 or 1 - not sure). It is only mocked up, seat and tank just sitting on - badges just hanging on - but I think it looks a lot better than when I started

It is nearing completion some 4+ years into the rebuild/restore/replace/refresh stage,
and I know it's not completely correct and still has a few issues, but it's one bike that I will never sell...

Removed the Mac muffler and cranked it up w/just the header, WOW - it sounded awesome!
Installed the stock 550F muffler I bought from a forum member on ebay for $50.
Also installed new passenger footpegs.

Is it gonna be bright enough in the daylight?
that would be a NO...
I decided to change it out with something more serviceable.
it's a gauge bulb from an old harness I had-
and I can put whatever color I want in. I think I'll get an amber LED for it. :)

My clutch cable drags across the headlight bucket.
so I modified it with a bigger hole and a curve across the top.

     and the brackets needed holes.

not done yet... getting late.

Nothing but my new fuse box showed up today!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Okay I'm going over the instructions for my floor epoxy stuff, and lo and behold, it only covers about 250 square ft, ie a one car garage.  Who in the hell has a one car garage that's going to go to the trouble to epoxy it?!!  Rustoleum must die.

So now I have to go back to the store in the morning when they first open to get another kit.  FAIL
