WHY DOES MY K5 KEEP MY WALLET EMPTY?
« on: December 19, 2005, 03:43:50 PM »
Dont get me wrong i like the bike,
Even when it feels like its fighting me everytime i start to work on it(restoring it).I might be asking a stupid question here.I have restored a 82 gpz 550,a 73 GT380.But the part prices for 750 parts are unbelievable. Is this the same for all 750's?.I know H2 ARE THAT WAY AND GT750"S also.Am i just being nieve?I am by no means giving in on getting this bike going.Just blowing off steam i guess.

Which parts are you finding particularly expensive?  And where are you pricing these things?  Sure body parts are are quite dear, but try finding these things new from the dealer for most other brands - at least Honda still supplies many parts that other companies long stopped selling.  I guess I never bothered to price parts for other bikes, but I never heard that Honda was particulary pricey - at least compared to other Japanese motorcycle companies.  Might just be my delusion.

welcome to the flat wallet club. ;D.  I guess prices are relative.  The more you NEED the part/piece, the MORE it seems to cost.  But just think of the ride you will have put together in the end.

Just my humble opinion, but you have to concentrate on what you want the bike to look like, and spend accordingly. Looks go a long way with these bikes. Try the free things first, like polishing engine covers till they are like mirrors (if that's your thing, just as an example). Once you see the metal coming back to life you will be inspired.
That inspiration will drive the rest of the build, making the expense worthwile. The more beauty you bring out of the bike, the more you will be inspired. Trust me, the 750 "DOES" this to you. Deals can still be found, (686.00 U.S. for NOS 341's and a long story) but you have to LOOK and BE PATIENT. Chase every lead you see for parts, but don't get over anxious. You also must have the ba**s to bid/spend accordingly when something really nice becomes available that is actually hard to obtain. Pretty soon, it'll come around. Maybe I'm obsessive/compulsive(?) And with the help of this sight, that's how I got my K5 to look and run like new ;D Stepping off the soapbox now.

Vintage motorcycles can be a jealous mistress.  The good news is that you don't lose that much - if any at all.

I have some partners (I'm an attorney) who belong to a country club and play golf.  I like to play golf one now and then (first clue that I'm not good at it) but the money they spend for that stuff is unbelieveable - and they have nothing to show for it at the end of the day other than a sunburn/tan.  You on the other hand have a vintage motorcycle - and a work of art.

Keep the faith.

All parts and prices have risen in the last 5 years or so. But compare the prices to a new machine and you are still miles ahead. Plus you have a degree of individuality that isn't available with a new bike. So yes the prices are high, but not to replacing new bike parts. Price an upper fairing or gastank for a Hayabusa or such and you'll live your K5. ;D

I recently was offered a modern commuter bike with a broken valve. I looked for prices, and valves, piston, head, camshaft, rocker and ancilliary material was over 800 bucks. That's in the same range than original Honda spares, and, what's very important -in my opinion- is that we are lucky Honda still offer the parts. I try to buy NOS when I can afford to, because keeping such a huge inventory costs money, so it has to be reflected on the price. You won't believe this, but it's cheaper and easier in Spain to get original Honda parts than Bultaco or Montesa. It's true that Bultacon and Montesa doesn't exist anymore, but they sold thousands of bikes. On the contrary, Honda never sold officially here in the early seventies, but the parts can be ordered through the dealer and brought here from the headquarters in Belgium in two or three days. Try to get the same parts for 70's Kawas...

I have been loking for a 'Kettle'; if you think Honda prices are bad, check out Kettle prices, and avaiability is a big problem. Honda parts seem reasonable to me, DSS are not bad prices for what they offer.
Just having my XJR1300 serviced was 300 pounds!! At least money spent on a 'classic' is not wasted?

What is a "kettle"? A Suzuki RE5 or the GT water-cooled?

I still believe your XJR kicked ass. It is destined to be a future classic, specially in the yellow-black-white colour scheme. I will get me one if the price drops. One or the CB Seven Fifty.

Yamahas are worse than that.  It is tough to get parts for some Yamahas built in the 90s.  There was a joke going around about that -

They've found a vaccine for AIDS.  They gave it a Yamaha part number and now nobody can get it.

It was the water cooled GT750. I have not ridden one, but I love the look of it.

I have a GT750 and there are still a lot of parts left in the dealer'sa network. And there is a huge cult following for the old Water Buffalos and the groups keep them running. The only part I had a problem getting was cqrb floats, and a chap in England has a ton of them new in boxes. However the price and then shipping them across the pond made it cheaper for me to buy a set of decent carbs.
Same as anything that becomes in vogue.  Prices skyrocket. But with the high prices generally follows an availability of parts that normally would be written off as junk.

Jim, I've owned three - a '75 a '73 and the more desirable '72 (in candy lavendar)  The bikes are pretty bullet proof.  The main area of concern is a failed water pump - a real beast to replace.  Parts are easy enough to find - including paint reproduction.

I just didn't find them all that fun although they are cool looking nice bikes.  I sold them both to guys in the UK.  The silver '75 is shown in the fourth picture down on this web page:

Thanks for that. Why were they 'not fun'? I assumed they would be as much fun as a Honda?

Clearly just a personal choice for me.

A few reasons I didn't find them any fun - The bikes are HEAVY, and are really crusiers - not really what I like to do.  My other bikes were just more fun on twisty roads.  You can see my other bikes here:

http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/kccaferacers/photos/browse/e05c

Straight line fun to be sure, but not the same as the GSXR or the Yamaha RD's for that matter.

Also I don't think they are as "universal" as a CB750.  In my humble opinion they don't lend them selves to being a cool cafe/chopper/bobber as well as the Honda.

Apologies in advance to those who have spent talent, time and treasure modifying these bikes - but I just (with exceptions) didn't see any that I really liked.

So once I had the GT750's restored there were other things I like to ride more (fun) and work on/customize (fun) and the GT750 collected dust and took up space (not fun).

All that being said - sometimes I wish I hadn't sold them  :-\

Thanks for the kind comments.  The black bike is a 1975 RD350 with 1977 RD400 wheels, brakes and gas tank.

Two stroke smell and sound is addicting.   :)

Nice bikes.

How much time do you invest in the average restoration?

Was the bikes Kenny Roberts used to win races on a RD350 or a RZ350?

Never had one, but that man could ride!

Personally, I like my little Kawasaki S2 better than my cb750's

I honestly don't know how much time.  If I included research and thinking about how I'm going to do something, it would be considerable.  That time is my outlet and I'd spend more if I could  :)

Kenny Roberts won races on all kinds of Yamahas.  Most famous for the TZ series bikes I believe.  I'm sure he probably won something on an RD.

The R5 and then RD350's big claim to fame is winning Daytona (a few times I think) over bikes with twice the displacement (including big two and four strokes)

The first time I was over a 100mph on a motorcycle was on an S2.  Talk about sentimental value :'(

Thanks.

Ben
