What's fair? update!
« on: November 08, 2009, 02:48:25 PM »
My brother and I went to look at a pair of hondas today and bought them. One is a 75 750F 8K miles nice, partway through a tune-up with the front end off for neck bearings. The owner will replace the forks and wheel tomorrow so we can roll it out. The brakes need gone through but he included all the parts. Missing a muffler and has a cracked sidecover. The other is a 77? 1200 goldwing with low miles and a fresh tune-up with a  windshield and aftermarket seat needs nothing ready to ride. Original except for an added gauge and seat. The PO is a former honda mechanic and known good guy. He has a one car garage and just bought an Aspencade so he needed the room.
Now the problem- we paid 1500 for both, We didn't have a plan who gets which and how to split the rediculous good deal?

Fist 77 wings where 1000 cc, known also as GL1000, the 1200 where built later starting around 1984. So are you sure its a 77.  77's stock had wire wheels, 1200 had comstar wheels.

This should have been sorted out before you bought the pair. What's your brother think? The wing is worth a little more, but seeing as he's your brother, you may just have to split it down the middle.

Ride them!  Take both bikes out and ride them both until you each have a favorite.  If you both want the same one, then give the other guy a smokin good deal on the bike he gets with a toss of the coin.  That would be as fair as any other way.

Thanks for the link, I auctually searched naked goldwing and didn't find it. That cafe'd wing is just too cool. We really had a blast on a poker run saturday, it's been a long time since we both had a running 750 at the same time. I'm thinking he'll want the GL, we're just enjoying these bikes again so I don't care which way it goes.

The naked Goldwing or "Bulldog" is  a rather tough looking bike when given the cafe treatment,  think it's called  nakedgoldwings.com or something.   I found it on  "Ronnie Cramers Motorcycle Index"..

Thanks guys, We had coffee this AM, my brother gets the wing, I get the 75F, even split. I told him you decided for us. He's been buying parts bikes for us to re-build and we are now officially out of space. We spent the day trying to put a 79 dohc 750 front end on an 82 frame- different tube sizes crap. Triple clamps next.

Update, We rode them a little before the weather turned, the wing is good as is, I re-built the brakes on the F, added another front brake set, even the little rotor fender. (always wanted triple disc.) still need an aditional brake hose. I went through the carbs about 6 times, the PO did the steering neck bearings already and the tires are sort of fresh, the second PO worked at a tire store and bought it 2 years ago and never got it running. I bought a replacement right hand control, it is made in China for Honda and the engine kill button looks purple, it's gotta go. Still a day late on every left sidecover. There are a couple dingers in the tank which is a shame, the rest of it is so nice. My brother is tickled with his wing, the whole deal really turned out nice. We rode by the PO's house, showed him the f was running, got a little more info on it while there.

Yes I do. the wing has an error on the title, it is listed as an 1100 but is a 1000. someone wrote over the cc and another dummy copied it that way on the new title. No foul I  guess. It got titled and licensed OK. Cycleman's post hit the nail on the head.

what a great deal, good looking bikes, take that seat off of the GL make a short little seat pan, put some clubmans or drag  bars on it and go.. the 750 is so nice, I wouldn't even touch it. incredible steal, I guess they are still out there to be had..

That appears to be a 77 GL1000 with an aftermarket seat, and from the pic, in good shape.  I am surprised U were unable to open nakedgoldwings.com. Maybe a work filter?

I did get on to naked goldwings, very cool. It's suprizing how these bikes come out of the woodwork. I found a parts wing and an early interstate for sale also. When people hear you are working on them, they come to you. The PO was a honda mechanic at one time, he had gone all through the wing but I finished the work on the F as part of the deal.

One very importing thing on the Goldwing is the timing belts. If you do not know how old they are you should change them. I have two and that is the first thing I did. If one brakes it will cause some real damage.

Great looking bikes mate, well done! I had a 1975 GL1000 "back in the day", and I couldn't get over how smooth it was compared to my CB750K1. at the time.

I don't like "Cafe'ing" anything just because you can, it's a matter of personal taste I know, but the GL1000 was such a neat looking bike, I can't see the point. Kind of like looking at a fat chick wearing a G string....... Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Did you decide who gets to pick their bike?
If there were ever a time to pull the older brother card it is now.
I bought a 78 750 in slightly worse condition for the same price, so think of it as a 2 for 1 deal.

Noah, I took the 750F, finished the brakes and carb work. I have the wing here too so I can ride either until my brother makes room in his garage. I'm safe there.
blue71turbo, that pic just aint right.
Terry, I like the muscle bike look, kinda leans toward cafe though.
6 adan, the p.o. did replace the belts, he's the kind of P.O. everyone would like, he was a honda tech once and very picky about his work.
1080, We drag race, thats why the practice tree. My daughter drives, she's a better driver than I am a crew chief. At one race this year she cut three consecutive .004 reaction times. The car didn't run 8.90 like it should have. Her little sister is as good on the tree but doesn't like going 180mph. When we had jr. dragsters they raced each other in the final 4 times.
