engine case painting do you prime first
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:01:41 AM »

Getting  ready to paint my cases and I was wondering if it is best to prime them first or just use the engine paint alone?

And  what is the best temp to bake the paint at  250-300 more or less?  thanks

That all depends on the paint system you're using.  Duplicolor for example sells Engine Primer for use with their engine paints.

The paint you use will also determine whether it should be baked, how hot, and for how long.

Duplicolor is, I think, 200F for 60 min?  Read the can.

I just finished cleaning, priming and painting my engine.  I used Dulpicolor's system.  The one I used did not mention baking, but it does require a week to cure.  It wants 3 coats, applied 10 minutes apart, all completed within a 1-hour timeframe.  After that hour, it wants a week to cure before respray.

It turned out nice, considering it was my first shot at doing anything like this.  The cleaning was so tedious -- it took me a week!

You can see the process and results here:

i swear by VHT engine enamel. i've had all kinds of fuel spills on a freshly painted engine, and no paint even thinned out. i bake at 200F for an hour, as per instructions. they sell an etch primer, but i don't use it and the paint adheres fine as long as the surface is very clean.

Architect.. What color is that ? flat ? or semi.. Looks great...  just got done running my cases in the dishwasher, the daughter threw me under the bus when the wife got home, of course the washer  was still running and she wondered why it smelled like "the garage" in the house, >:( but my daughter thought it was the coolest thing she had ever seen, she has been helping with the rebuild from day one, but it does work and well

It's Duplicolor's "DE 1651 Cast Coat Iron."  It doesn't give a finish type on it, but it's a satin or low-gloss appearance.  I wanted something that was not glossy, and it delivered.

http://www.duplicolor.com/products/colors/highheat.html  (Sixth from the bottom)

I wanted a dark gray, but it needed to be a warm gray because of the way my frame powdercoat turned out (it was supposed to have been a cooler gray about 2 shades darker).

I can't complain about how it turned out.  I've since used it to paint my brake caliper (hope it can hold up to that kind of abuse!), my brake master cylinder and the starter cover for the engine.  I'm sure I'll use it for a few more parts that will want to coordinate.

My advice, though:  buy twice as many cans as you think you need.  I started out with one can of primer and two cans of paint.  Endded up using double that (at least).

FYI Por-15 makes some really durable hi temp paints. I sprayed mine on and baked the
parts in the grill for an hour to cure. Of course I had to keep a straight face when the wife
said dinner tasted funny ???  Maybe we should start a thread with funny things we do
when the wife is away......... ;D
