1978 CB750F Rings
« on: November 09, 2009, 05:39:40 PM »
Well, I have finally plastic gaged the crank shaft and the con rods and know which bearings need to be ordered.

Now I believe comes the fun part, the "piston rings".  I have seen the CB750F 850 kits, but the 600.00 kit at CBR Zone is way to much for me and the kit sold by Cycle X would require the purchase of a new cam (200.00), and not to mention the machining cost of the sleeves.  I just noticed that Cycle X is now offering a 1st & 2nd Over Piston Kit which includes rings and wrist pins, but with my luck these will not work on the F models.

While on this journey I have read of some other board members which have had their existing pistons grooves machined to except the "K model Rings", so I ordered a set from Z1.  I thought that this would be a pretty good solution because of the availability of the "K Rings" so I received the K model rings and took some quick comparison measurements between my "F Rings" and the "K Rings" and here is what I got,

*Old Rings: #1= .046 in./ #2= .046 in./ #3 A-.018 in., B-oiler ring=.070 in., C-.018 in.

*New Rings: #1= .057 in./ #2= .057 in./ #3 A-.017 in., B- oiler ring= .072 in., C- .017in.

I am hoping that perhaps the members which have done this could chime in and perhaps give me the contact info of the shop that did the work so that I could have mine done this way.

Here is a pic of the oiler rings, the one on the left is from my 1978 CB750F and the one on the right is the standard rings I ordered from Z1.

Thanks, any and all help/ info is greatly appreciated.

Call Ed at Total Seal. Good guy. In the last 2 years I have had 1 set of pistons cut for rings when he couldn't fit them with existing stock and another set of pistons I sent he was able to fit existing rings without cutting.

Last time I re-ringed my 810 Yoshi pistons I sent them to Hastings Rings and they told me which stock Honda rings fit (68+ CB350 twin). Good guys too.

If you come up with a solution PLEASE post it for all the other guys that are in the same predicament! Use a heading like "Ring Source for 77/78 CB750F". Post in Tech Pages.

I can now provide ring part numbers for 900 Henry Abe pistons (but thats a much less frequent situation) in addition to rings for a Yoshi 810 kit.

Your oil rings may actually be the same. Measure the lands and dry fit the rings without installing.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I have 2 sets of F rings that I bought, hoping they would work on my K. I haven't had a chance to see if they work yet, but if they don't I can hook you up.
