Cam chain woes

My 79 650 is constantly loosening it's camchain and I need to adjust it regularly, it is probably the adjuster mechanism.
Is there a way of checking the useful life left in my cam chain without removing it from the bike?

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I believe you can pull the rocker box cover with engine in the frame,then you can inspect.Bill
