just have to brag...
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:19:25 AM »
i feel proud of myself after pulling apart and and rebuilding the gearbox on my 73 Bonneville 750. It wasn't shifting correctly, so I pulled it apart, inspected, and put everything back together. With the factory service manual I found online, it was easy. Hardest part was getting the mainshaft fork selector to stay in place against the camplate while installed the layshaft with its selectors, then putting the spindle through the fork selectors. Had to wipe down the camplate and the selector of oil, then grease the hell out of the fork selector's pin. Wish I had some photos of it. You have to rebuild the two shafts in a particular order, so that everything works together. Now transmissions don't scare me with their complexity. I wish I had some photos. But, not to brag or anything ;D

And that fixed the problem?

yeah, fixed it right out straight. I think the plunger that comes up through the bottom of the gearbox case, may of not been tightened up all the way by the last person who worked on the bike. But I removed the layshaft and gear selectors forks, then reassembled it just to make sure everything was together correctly.
Maybe I should change it to "If you don't ride in the snow, you don't ride."
