...could it work with a '76 CB550 if it was altered?  How is it different?

not for a 550 because the dimmer switch is in the left hand switch for a 550 along with the horn.it is also a vertical switch where this dimmer switch is horizontal.  the right hand switch also has the starter button on a 550 along with the kill switch

It looks to be pre 75, as there is an off position for the head lamp,  around that time federal law was changed to require the head lamp to be on all the time,  this type has the two wire starter switch.

It looks like a CB750 K2 switch for the Australian market with the . L H for the head light.
I think the American market switches had On Off only from memory or the head light turned on with Ign switch.
There is some difference but I cannot remember exactly what it is.
If you are interested in selling it send me a PM.

I have a cb350f, and it looks just like mine. Aren't many of them universal?

Too many of these switches look the same.  It was driving me nuts trying to find the right one on ebay.

Post the colour codes of the wires coming out of it.

Either way, it is the wrong one for a 76 550, as you need the three wire starter switch.  (like me).   mine has headlamp control on the left, hi and lo is up and down, on left also.   If it is a cheap knockoff made i tiawan there is no point in paying a lot of $$$.
