ignition switch replacement
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:08:30 PM »
so after taking some time off to ride my 750 shadow this summer i am back  working on my 78 cb 550 k turned into a  bobber.when i purchased the bike the keys were lost for the bike and so i had to replace the ignition switch.i picked one up at crc2 online but got a square 4 pin as i did not want locking forks switch.now then new one has 4 wires and original has 5 can i still use this 4 wire switch and which wire is going to be omitted.

i may be incorrect but without isolating the coil wires  ie run/off switch in the right control. you have to use the 5 wire style.  so grab some relays or have a separate switch for the headlight/tail/brake lights.
i had a problem with this on a 76 550f i got. someone put a regular automotive ignition switch in it.  which would blow the main fuse instantly. i separated the circuits and it solved the problem.
I'm sure there are many other ideas but , but i hope it helps some
guess who?

i don't think it's a regular automotive ignition switch it listed it for the cb550 but without locking forks.i just need to find out how to wire it up for the ignition to turn on ,push start to work, and for it to run as i am not installing turn signals or my indicator panel  just going to have the bare essential electric to run.will post some pics as soon as i get my headlight on.

ok so i got it figured i guess as the wires are matched for color codes.but i do have 1 question factory harness has 2 brown wires and new ignition switch has only 1 can i tag the 2 browns to the single brown on the new switch as the rest should be straight forward red to red ,black to black, brown with white tracer to brown with white, and finally brown to 2 browns am i correct?
