CB750K0 rear tail light wiring question - will it fit on a K2?
« on: November 12, 2009, 05:32:06 am »
I want to swap my K2 fender (and large tailight) for a K1 fender (with small tailight) - seems easy enough right? However, there are 3 wires for the K2 tailight - green, brown and green/white. However on the tailight section that I have (thought it was K1 but K1 should also have 3 wires) there are only 2 wires coming from the light - green and brown.

Anyone know if this is a K0 tailight and if so how do I go about hooking it up to my 3 wires? I dont think I can....correct?

thanks for any advice
cheers
Andy

Hey Andy...here is a pic of what my KO tail light has...the ground, a brown and I think the other green had a yellow stripe but not sure.  Hope this helps.  You have 2 of the wires and I imagine you could fashion a ground there.  My ground is just a male/female plug on the bottom of the housing. i think green is the ground unless they changed the colors around early on... but if i were u id see if i could change the inner light assembly( the guts) it shouldnt be too tough... check and see if the light in the k2 has two filaments... cause from the sound of it it doesnt.... if it does( now that i think about it) just make sure the light is grounded.... the assembly usually isnt it floats on some rubber spacers on the fender but if u connect them somehow u should be ok...(provided u have a 2 filament bulb)

For the most part:

On the "small" taillights, the GREEN is Ground (like the rest of the bike) and the GREEN/STRIPE (stripe color varied) is brake. The BROWN is the running taillight.

On K2 and early K3, the GREEN/STRIPE changed the stripe color, then became [mostly] BROWN/WHITE during the K3 for BRAKE.

On the K4 and later, the BROWN/WHITE remained the brake for a long time, but sometimes the stripe was dots instead.

Caveat: when Honda started their second 750 factory (near the middle of K1 production), these particular wire colors were not real consistent. This happened again around the K5 time. The GREEN and BROWN always were the same, but the third wire for the brakelight changed several times for short periods, even not matching the harness connectors under the seat! I have seen the following colors for that brakelight wire, just on the taillight itself:
GREEN/WHITE
GREEN/BROWN
BROWN/WHITE
BROWN/GREEN
BROWN with WHITE DOTS

Since this taillight also fits the 450, 500T, 500, 550, and even for a while the 360T, it was probably a build-what-we-have-today situation for Honda in those days.  ;D

The wiring harnesses mostly used GREEN/STRIPE (often YELLOW stripe, sometimes WHITE) or else BROWN/STRIPE (mostly WHITE stripe, sometimes RED) to carry the brakelight circuit to the two brake switches.

Thanks Hondman for the excellent details. Ill need to double check tonight but...I dont think I had a green/white wire on my tailight...looked just like green and brown. Ill need to remove the tailight to make extra sure on this...Ill report back tomorrow with more.

Thanks to all for the fast response!

Just to update this....here are two photos of my light..I now see there is a tang that I am assuming the green ground wire should connect to, and the brown and "green" wire shown should connect to the brown and green/white wire on my K2.

Thanks for the clear explanations on this!
cheers
Andy

Don't we wish there was a good way to get the rust out from under these taillights?

Absolutely! I was hoping that once the license plate was on the back it would hide most of it. Maybe Johnie has a way - he is the expert in polishing after all ;)

I had the KO & K1 rechromed. But they do not buff the chrome in that area as it is not seen anyway. The license plate will cover it. You will be fine.
