750 cylinders to head mating surface scuff
« on: November 12, 2009, 03:47:00 PM »

i received some parts in the mail recently, and to my dismay it looks like the seller used a rotary disk to clean up the gasket surfaces and the tops of the pistons! ARG!

my question is, how bad could it be?  if there are a few scratches or much light sanding, could i just put a gasket on and go? or should i put the whole thing on a surface block and lap out even the smaller imperfections? how sensitive is that surface for compression increases?

i'd like to hear some feedback about similar situations, and hello to all its my first post!

Do you know any speedskaters?  The ones who skate on ice?

I used to be one in a former life.  I still have a diamond sharpening stone used to sharpen speed skates.  It's a long, flat, steel bar coated with diamond dust.  I know the REAL engine builders here will prolly freak when I tell you this, but I use this stone to remove scratches on the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and head.  Any deep scratches get a little HondaBond.  Gouges earn the part a trip to the machine shop.

Welcome to the forum, by the way!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I would just bring them to a machine shop and have them checked to see how bad they are...they might even just check them quick for free.

+1 on the above.

If that is not an option use a 24" steel ruler on it's edge and lay it across the the cylinders to measure any warping.  I used to know what the standard was. You insert a feeler guage at various points to see if it is within spec.

Nicks and small gouges are not usually a problem on a street motor.

I paid $100 to have my Z1 head and cly machined flat.
