Headlight case or rear shell on K7
« on: November 12, 2009, 04:47:17 PM »
The headlight case or rear shell on my K7 is chrome. I believe it should be black plastic, like earlier years. Am I correct? I just picked this bike up recently and the owner had no idea. Anyone know for sure? A previous owner might have chromed it. For that matter, it may not even be the correct headlight, though seems to look right for the bike.

The headlight bucket on a 750 K7 is black.  I don't believe any 750's had factory chrome headlight buckets.  K0's (and maybe K1's) had headlight buckets and fork ears that were color keyed to the tank and sidecovers.

I thought it didn't look right. I would like to replace it with a black shell, but notice all the wiring goes into the headlight. Is it a real pain to change it over to the proper shell?

Not really a big deal.  Just take your time and write things down and/or take pictures if you think there's the slightest chance you'll be confused reassembling.

All of the wires are color coded and the connectors are male and female so it is pretty hard to go wrong if it is stock. What you may find is it is a bit of a mess when you take it apart if previous owners have not been kind to the wiring or if mods have been done. As the previous person said, take your time, write things down and have a good wiring schematic with you for reference. It also a good opportunity to clean all the connectors and to have a good look at all the wires to make sure none are nicked or otherwise damaged. Your bike might be more reliable after you do this cleanup.
Don't forget to disconnect the battery before you start disassembling the headlight bucket!

I don't know how different it might be on the K7, but I recently replaced the headlight shell on my K1 without disconnecting any wiring besides the headlight and turn signals.
