Hey Ern,  I think it's that Glenn Stauffer guy that's doin the messin.

First he makes me a Master with over one thousand, the three days later I'm a hot shot with 995.

Who dose this guy think he is, he's acting as if he owns our forum.  ;D

Nothing personal at work here, just routine, long overdue forum maintenance.

Your post numbers are going to drop whenever we go in and clean out old stale threads in the forums - something that is necessary to keep this system working efficiently.

The good stuff in any of the forums gets moved into the FAQ or remains in the forum for posterity.  The trivial stuff goes to the dust bin eventually.

Posts to the tech forum stay there unless they are long unanswered questions so far down the list that no one will ever see them again, don't add anything to a thread that is being archived, or contain information that gets compiled into the FAQ.  Posts to the open forum are by their nature more timely, often irrelevant to the real purpose of these forums (as in not about SOHC/4 bikes), and sometimes nothing more than a smiley face  ;) - that forum is going to be kept to about 6 months of messages but the ageing out won't be automatic since there are some good threads there which will be kept around.  What stays and what goes is at the discretion of the moderators.

I think it is a reasonable policy, but you are welcome to argue with it.

I guess I should be flattered.... I didn't think I ever said anything. It's ALL trivial.

Don't be embarrassed.  I don't mean to offend anyone, but we do have to be realistic about the technical limitations to resources like this.  Not everything can stay online forever and when things need to be deleted, there are judgement calls to be made.

The real question in this thread was about post counts and this is all a long way of saying, don't get too attached to them - they'll change periodically.  Its just the way this software works.

I am just surprised that Sam's count only dropped by 5 or so. I would have thought it would have dropped by hundreds given Glenn's measurement!  ;)

End of year clean out is good. The real bright side is if you (ME) said something dumb it will eventually go away unless Glenn starts a new category for things we wish we never said. (like the Terry's dirty little secret stuff)  :D ;D

Clean out the old deadwood. And post counts are only a number. However on some boards they treat the post counter like badges of courage and more than once I watched total board warfare over those little numbers. IMHO if you have something stellar to say all will remember you - no need for a counter to let you knoew how many times you said something. Just my $0.02. Please don't start a board war over it! ;D

We were wondering why your post count had dropped so dramatically?

I'm not sure my post count was ever really that high; I never really took that much notice of it.  Could be that I had a bunch of posts in some of the April threads that I removed or moved to a holding place for inclusion in the FAQ.

Don't you wink at me Jimmy Shea,.....I am down your way in three weeks time and I'll bring biffta and Puffett with me to sort you out ;D.    Incidentally, before you ask,...the chrome tube with rubber end covers across the front of the bike is called a handlebar.
This is to make the bike change direction when in motion. You don't have to use these, as you can move your body to achieve the same end result. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

While I quite enjoy some of the banter and repartee that goes on in the forum, I do think that it makes it difficult to pick out the 'MEAT'  That is when following interesting information about 'timing' or 'sticky clutches' the very large number of comic answers can pad out a topic until it gets a bit hard to follow. Am I on my own in this line of thought? Just look through this topic and check the percentage of un-neccessary comments.

I agree with you when it comes to the Tech Forum subjects, and that's why I generally try to keep my replys on topic in that area.  But I like the fact that here on the Open Forum it's anything goes.  Gives some entertainment value to this board and provides a change of pace from the often dry and repetetive discussions about cleaning out slow jets and how to fix a sticky front brake.

That's the reason we split the forums.  All the playful banter goes on here in the Open Forum.  That's where you are posting this.  Look at the Tech forum and you'll be hard pressed to find a thread that has more banter than 'meat'.  Sure, you'll find some 'repartee' there, but that is because this is a friendly bunch and a certain measure of comraderie has naturally developed.  Maybe you see something different from what I see?

Yes, you're right. I should have considered the relative levels in 'Tech' and 'Open' forums before commenting. Put it down to advanced age or senility and let's get back to the fourth helping of Turkey.  Merry Christmas everyone.
