CB750 K0 Restoration - Round #3

After buying my k0 #1029054 last winter of 2008 and doing a restoration, it was a pretty good summer of about 4-5k. Unfortunately about two weeks ago I developed an oil leak between head and cylinder. Therefore after some SOHC.net advice (Gordan and others), I immediately took it out of service for rebuild. This thread we follow my progress.

Here are my goals this winter:

1.) Top end engine rebuild of seals, gaskets, rings etc.
2.) Refurbish Instrument cluster for covers and face gages
3.) Refurbish seat with new foam, cover and hardware
4.) Rebuild master cylinder and plumbing
5.) Refurbish and add vintage Shoei saddle bags
6.) Add a few new bling items

Issue found today. Now I know where my cold start issues come from...
I lined them up on first assembly but took it the carb links apart couple time and didnt check after.

Painter has qouted me 340.00 plus shipping for the paint job of both saddle bags.
This comes with 5 coats of clear. Seems a tad high?

Also concerned about tears in fiber glass on saddle bag hidges.
Anyone hear fix and re-enforce worn out saddlebags?

The stress from opening the top and leaning back has the top ripping around the mounted bracket. Might have to drill out rivets and add plate with epoxy.

Removed oil pan today (never been removed before with 14k on engine), except for a metal thread on the bottom there was little slugde, flakes or dirt. There is absolutely zero plastic chips or parts of the cam/drive chain tensioner visible.

If compression is good on all cylinders, I will not rebuild engine and just re-torque head.

Status Report:
-SaddleBags sent to painters
-Sent some carb items to be nickel plated (clips and thumb screws)
-New engine screws and other hardware ordered to replace existing
-Placed order for yamiya for seat cover, seat foam, gauge faces/covers, etc finally
-Compression tester purchased should be coming in th mail anytime
-Purchased matching shoei top case on ebay for 25 bucks shipped. Man i'm stoked!

Hopefully I can test compression and pull engine out this weekend. :)

Need to design and draw up the mounting hardware for the saddle bags this weekend and have it send out to be machined.

Looking good.  I love those Shoei saddle bags!  I have a KO sandcast I have been picking up parts for for years now and hope to get started on soon.  Your Yamiya purchase sounds like a good Christmas present to self.   Where did you find those saddle bags?

Pressure tester arrived today!  ;D Just checked the compression
cyl #1 - 158
cyl #2 - 150
cyl #3 - 155
cyl #4 - 155

Seems okay I think  ???  Thoughts anyone  ???
Cylinder #2 readings started at 137 but i re-seated and got 152.
The third try gave me 150 after re-seating again.

Saddlebag parts designed and sent out to be machined in steel.
Later I will have them chromed.

Next step is to pull the engine this weekend and scope the top portion of the engine.
I have a lighted fiber scope I can snake into the engine to check cam chain tensioner etc...

Engine out...

I made the mistake of trying to get the engine out with the swing arm, breather, shocks, and front forks attached. I'll never try that again. i scraped up my frame so bad I may get it power coated again. Engine looking extremely healthy looking down the top end.

Head re-torqued today and then re-assembled.

After broken loose, many bolts seemed to tighten up a 1/4-1/2 turn.

Last minute decision change.

Probably will just re-build top end now.
Just ordered NOS wire harness.

Contacted painter, said he would paint the top case for additional 60 bucks.
Could not resist, sending out top case tomorrow.

Have your head and cylinders O-ringed together, and with a cometic head gasket...will never leak again!

Changed my mind again today.
I will not rebuild top end of engine.  ::)
