Swapping rear wheels or hubs from CB750 to CB500
« on: November 17, 2009, 06:40:51 PM »
Ive got both of the rear wheels pulled off of my CB750 and CB500 Four. My 500 is the bike that I plan on making a cafe racer. My CB750 is going to be my stock bike. The reasoning is for a lack of decent shape/missing stock peices on the 500. Anyways, my 750 came with a 16" rear wheel. My 500 has its stock 18" rear wheel. My plan was to swap the 16 rear to the 500 and swap the 18 rear to the CB750. Im finding some problems along the way. For example, the sprockets dont interchange between the two. The spacing for mounting is different. And they are not the same sized sprockets. Basically what im asking is Is there a way to swap a CB500 Four rear wheel to a  CB750? and swap a CB750 wheel to a CB500?

Why can't you lace one hub to the other?   sounds like work, though....

There is no easy way, but anything is possible. 750 an500 drum sizes are different and the 500 is notorious for rust "blowing" the liner so be careful

Does that mean that the iron liner breaks apart on the CB500, or what?  Thanks.  RR

Rust starts between the alloy hub and cast iron linerpushing the cast onwards unevenly, doesnt usually break but means pedal oscilates wildly and new shoes dont fit

Yeeeouch! I guess I'll be swapping a CB750 drum rear onto my project CB500, unless I go with triple disks... Thanks.  RR

I think I will go ahead and have the hubs swapped between wheels. Its gonna cost me a little bit, but then I'll have the politically correct hub on the 18" wheel. Im going to be painting the 16" rim. and I have a friend with a blast cabinet. What is the appropriate prep for painting the rim? I need to rough up the chrome, I know, but will sandblasting be too invasive? Im especially concerned about where the spokes go into the rim.
