CB750 Speedo and Tacho disassembly

The Honda speedo and tachos are sealed together with a soft metal band. For the purpose of rebuilding the instrument(face renewal) this band needs to be removed. Is there a specific tool to do this, can one be made for removal and replacement??

There is a thread on this here somewhere but the short answer is yes.  Go to a hardware store, Home Despot, etc and get a paint can opener and use it to pry up the crimped down part of the ring.  Do a search for the thread if you want more info.

Some pry, some cut.

The best method IMO is to carefully pry the ring until the assembly separates- but ONLY if the housing/bracket that you are running can camoflauge the chongered backside of the ring. No matter how carefully you press or tweak it, there will be telltale signs of the prying.

Cutting is another method, but most will then epoxy (JB Weld, Hysol etc.) the union upon rebuilding.

I did this on gauges for my XS650 and they have a rubber ring that snaps over the metal the ring and covers it up as they do get "chongered" up in the process. ;D  On the Xs650 website some where using a narrow band of 4 inch heat shrink to hid the ring.

And the needle. If you're planning on keeping the original face put something down to protect it from the pliers.

I pop the needle off with a couple spoons and just roll it off. Then repaint the tip.

i found a fork works really well when removing the needle. slide the prongs of the fork around the tach/speedo needle and rest the bottom side of the fork on top of the screw heads for leverage. be carefull not to break the needle off! maybe a squirt of WD-40 would be a good idea.

good idea heating it up with the hairdryer, might have saved me from a broken speedo needle :-\
