72 cb750 Cruise control knob problem.
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:35:04 AM »

http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=126077&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1972&fveh=3000

(numbers 11 and 12 are the bolt and spring knob Im talking about.)

I have an issue where my cruise control knob doesnt seem to hold or catch the throttle.  I took apart the assembly, and it looks like the knob screws in and out normally but i dont feel the bolt hold the throttle at all.  Has anyone seen or experienced it before?  Looking at the diagram, it appears mine is put together the same way.  Im not sure what to change/replace.

if the throttle "lock" wont work, usually #9 is missing. It actually pushes against the throttle tube when the knob is screwed in.

That tensioner shoe usually falls out if you are not watching for it, many are missing..
if you step on it, it is probably hooped.. :o

should look like a strip of shim stock bent sorta like a sideview of a  weiner.. has a little hole to catch the screw end..

There's an equivalent part for Harleys that I though might be made to work, but I've not taken any measurements or anything.  Perhaps you could make one out of scrap metal but it'd have to be springy enough to do the job.

I got mine new from Honda about 10 years ago, have you checked your local dealer to see if they're still available?

I havent really checked anyone in town but Ill call around.  Ive never seen the part i need up close and the diagram online kind of sucks so I wouldnt have a very good idea what Im making.  i imagine its moon shaped with a rubber layer on the inside curve so it grabs the throttle.  maybe ill look closer to my bike and try and figure out how big it should be...anyone know where i can see more detailed schematics?

i took apart the throttle grip housing on my cb500 and cleaned it the other day and applied a little lithium grease. i believe the cruise controll knob (more like a friction plate that reduces the recoil from the return spring) looks the same as yours. I'll take another look at it and i might be able to help you figure out what your missing. You should stop by 6 Cycle Salvage in Ashland. I bet they'll have what your looking for. http://www.6cycle.net/

It's very similar to this part sold by Drag Specialties for Harleys:

http://www.dragspecialties.com/fatbook/12/201/7729351

I'm thinking of just ordering one to check out, they only cost $0.95.

The OEM Honda part number, btw, is 53163-300-020
The harley part is #56396-74A

If the harley part works I'll let you know.
