... because I need to be able to power some heated gloves!! My hands are FREEZING!!

Looks like I need 27 watts, 2.2A to power some gloves.

So LEDs for tail/brake running/signal will save some power. What else can I do??

Hell, maybe I'll just carry a 2nd battery for the AM commute & throw in on the charger at night....

I need to do something!

Actually that second battery may be the easiet solution. I spent two years in your area and please take this the right way, it ain't that cold there.

Yeah - I know, I'm from Wisconsin. I've lived thru -17F. But dammit my hands were too cold to work my helmet strap after my 40min ride in this morning in 34deg.

I know, I am just breaking you shoes. It is a NY thing and one of the reasons we are loved around the country. A small battery may do the trick.

27v at 2.2w tho... I might be able to squeeze that out of the bike. I mean, that's like half a low beam headlight. Or roughly the equivalent of turning on the brights, no?

Wait, 27V or 27W?

27V may be problematic to obtain without some electronics

27W should be attainable by changing out all the bulbs as you've said.

Your standard 1157 bulb is what, 8 watts low, 23 watts high. 1156 are like 5W-8W. Don't forget your instrument backlights.

Lots of potential wattage savings there.

You actually originally said 27 watts. If I were you I would out a voltmeter on the battery an plug in your gloves run the motor up to 3K and see what you get. If you are in stop and go traffic it could be a problem since the alternator is piss poor at idle. I adjusted my regulator up a notch at low idle but it is not great at long lights.

My heated grips only use 14 Watts, or at least that's what they say.

The gloves I'm looking at have a coil woven over the whole surface area (vs. just the underside as in grips)

its what is most commonly used on snowmobiles... but i have no experience with either

They work great for me. Keep my fingers nice and warm.

But then I got a BMW with heated grips and now I'm a pu$$y.

It'a amazing how warm hands will extend your comfort. I miss my heated grips. Not to mention the BMW heated vest. ummmmmmmm toasty

I just bought some really nice gloves an my local bike shop, they are gauntlet style and go up over the sleeve keeping the arms warmer too.

Hi Cold Ones
I run a vest that claims to draw 33 watts with no problem on my avatar. I usually turn it off when I am stopped at a light. Wind chill is noticeable. Slow down if too cold. Speed up if to hot.

HID headlight will give you some watts, and give you a brighter light. And while it doesn't look that good, a full size handlebar windshield keeps the wind chill at a minimum.

In my experience, an Oregon motorcycle products solid state reg/rect will do wonders.
