Make sure to stop drill the crack at both ends so the crack does not migrate!

Also boiled linseed oil would be a better choice to protect the inside of your tubing. Its been used to protect the inside of steel aircraft tubing since the 20's  ;) just make sure its the boiled stuff and not raw or it will never dry. Most home improvement stores or woodworking stores carry it.

This is cool: tell us more!

I've never done it and its been years since I've read about it. AC43.13 touches on the subject a little, but after reading about it, this process may not be the best route because I'm sure the insides of the tubes will probably see moisture again. Here's a link to what I was talking about look on page 6-253. http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgAdvisoryCircular.nsf/8ce3f88c034ae31a85256981007848e7/ccfe0d58d41d2c8086256a55006c6b67/$FILE/AC43.13-1b.pdf

Ya know a better route may be cold galvanizing paint. I used some on a steel cylinder that was full of water 24-7 and 2 years later the cylinder looked like the day I painted it. You can find it at McMaster Carr. Page 2092  ;) http://www.mcmaster.com/#cold-galvanizing-paint/=4jce4x

Yep that sucks and its in a nasty spot.
Do you weld?

I would do one of 2 things.
Replace a section by welding a tube inside the frame tube and than another tube cut in half and welded over it.

Or you can cut out the crack so you have a square-sh hole in it and then cut a replacemnt section out of some tube and weld it in. the tube would need to be the same diameter as the cracked tube. If you need a section of stock frame let me know. I have a few cut up bikes sitting in my shop. U pay shipping. The hard part with all this is that you have the kick stand mount right there. If it was me i would take it off to fix it. But i'm not saying you cant fix it with it on.

If you need help sorting this out write me. I'll try and help you out.
Good luck man.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

tubing should be 1 in OD by .060 wall.

I am thinking if Honda welded all the way around the stand gusset, that is the way to go.. in fact if I remember right, it is right in front of stand mount?

If so try this, form a piece to look like it is an extension of the stock gusset, grind one end of stock weld off or put this beside, then weld around.. do it right it will look factory, rather than a patch/repair... look more like it was made that way..

Hey all,

I had a local CB guy weld it back together. I'm certain the pictures made it look worse than it was. First, the crack didn't go all the way to the kickstand mount. I grinded it down further after I took the photo. Second, there wasn't a section missing, it was just a split that opened up. So we hammered it back down and then welded it length-wise. It created a great seal and looks good as new. I then drilled holes as recommended by Hondaman and will be spraying the oil in this weekend.

On another note, I never use the kickstand...only the center stand. I was actually considering leaving it off.

I showed this to our welding instructor. If you do decide to weld it, you must grind it down smooth. People think that if you build it up you make it stronger which is opposite. You magnify the stresses at the edges. The strongest welds, do not look like welds when they are finished.

We did grind it down until it was nice and bare. The guy that did it for me is an old chap, been welding for about 30 years. Did a great job in my opinion...and I've seen some bad ones.

Whatever caused it it sounds like you made a good repair.
