HELP removing rear axle bearing
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:37:06 PM »
I have a 77 750. I removed the rear wheel assbly to replace the tire. Did find that the right rear wheel bearing is bad[opposite from chain side]. I tried to use a slide hammer with puller expanded inside the center of bearing. I can't seem to get the bearing to move at all. Am I missing something? I have a Clymer's book which doesn't have any removal info. Tom  ???

Not had to do this job myself, but suggest that you download a proper manual. These are generally better than the Clymer. Have a look in the download manual pages above.

Good luck

just did the rear wheel bearings on my '72cb750 the other night, this might help:  i removed the cush drive/sprocket carrier, then pried the inner bearing spacer over.  this gives access to the back of the bearing you're removing.  i drove both out using a long drift, they're stubborn - so good luck.  other members may have additional methods, but this has worked for me in the past.  it may help to have an exploded view of the wheel, available at cmsnl.com

I have a tool suggestion, I'm not here to advertise or anything, but I was in your shoes with my 550. I was using a slide hammer with a blind hole puller for about an hour on one bearing and could not for the life of me get it to budge. I picked up the wheel bearing tool from Pit Posse and had the job done, I kid you not, in about 15 minutes per wheel - bearing removal and install.

Works too.  Wish I'd had one the first time I changed the rear bearings.

Hey,
Sure appreciate your ideas. Sounds like I need to remove the sprocket to get at the bearing to push it out. I hate to spend funds to buy a remover that I may never use again.
    Thanx,Tom

Make sure you download the service manual.

(Not that there's a lot more about bearing removal there but you should have it anyway.)

Also, some Auto Parts stores like O'Reilly and Auto Zone will loan special tools for free, you just have to leave a refundable deposit.  That way you don't have to buy a tool for a one-time use. A bearing puller is a perfect example.
