I finally bought a 750!!!
« on: November 16, 2009, 12:19:16 PM »
So I finally bought myself a CB750! I've been wanting one for some time because 1) They're awesome, 2) The little 350 isn't the greatest highway/distance/2-up bike, and 3) They're awesome. I got an email from forum member Johnie about this bike he found and the guy just wanted to get rid of it (too many other bikes). His price was right and the clincher was that it had a title. On Saturday I went to take a look at it and just had to buy it. I got into some hot water with the girlfriend on saturday night, but oh well. It was worth it cause I own a cb750 now ;D

Fast forward to today. With much help from Johnie, we got the bike loaded into his van and back to my place. I would have started this post sooner but I had to sit on the bike in my garage for a while and make vroom vroom noises. I can't wait to ride it someday. It's going to be a little while till that happens since I don't have the money to be buying parts and what not, but who cares. It's nice just to know it's there and it's mine.

Even though it's dirty, it's actually in pretty good shape. It has a 9/75 build date but is titled as a 76. Apparently it was ridden two years ago. Previous owner said it had a big fairing on it that he took off and that's why the headlight is missing. All the chrome should shine up just fine. There's a little rust in the bottom of the tank but I would say it's better than my 350. Obviously it needs a few things like sidecovers, airbox, headlight, blinkers but all in all it was a good buy. The plan is to first get it to be a rider and then slowly restore it to stock as time and money allow.

I cannot thank Johnie enough for first telling me about the bike and then helping me get it back here.

Pics!

Me with my new prize

Having done this before with his K4, John knew just how to slide that baby in there.

Once we got it unloaded we pulled a float bowl just for kicks. Deffinitely gonna need a cleaning, but could be worse.

Now the fun part begins.....

Tear right into it, there's a ton of stuff you can do for free or very much on the cheap.

Run a search for Coca-Cola and aluminum foil to get rid of rust on chrome, Molasses to get the rust off nuts and bolts, there are several ways to clean the rust out of your tank and keep it from coming back, lots of ways to cheaply clean those carbs up, and there's a good writeup on upgrading just about every electrical item on the bike.

I recommend crawling under the bike with a mirror and a flashlight and checking the bottom of the frame rails, there have been quite a few frames mentioned on the forums lately with damage that wasn't easily seen.

Good score. Congrats.

I got my 350 into my Caravan, but it was tight. I had to remove the mirrors and fold down the bars a bit to get it in. Never thought a 750 would fit.
Have fun.

Looks like a nice platform for your project. As Alan mentioned there are many things you can do for very low cost.It should cost very little for a first start-up but one thing I would probably do is address the rust in the fuel tank soon as that can be a problem that will just get worse and could evolve into pin holes and other issues. Way to go Johnie for stuffing that bike in there ;D

Did it in a Venture. Will and way. Good Catch. Carbs are easy clean if you have access to a ultrasonic cleaner ( jewelers, gun smiths, labs have this stuff around) and you only need it for an afternoon!
Enjoy the process. ;)

Glad to see the Wisconsin 750 army is growing.  Looks like the bike is about two afternoon's worth of work from hitting the road.  Nice find.

Hey I'm with you on the no money thing. Just do all the free stuff you can. Cleaning the parts is one of the biggest chores. Get that out of the way.  Then you learn to be very resourceful, frugal, and hopefully get hooked up with some freebies occasionally.

I actually could not believe how easy it was to Remove and clean the carbs actually.  The tough part was getting them back on those rubber sleeves.  New sleeves for the airbox made that part nice.

On my V4, omg, I HATE THOSE.
