stuck clutch

 '71 750, I got running, finally , (blown up and parked since '81).   Adjusting everything possible on the clutch it won't budge, apparently stuck.  Is this common on barn finds?  Are there any tricks or  anyway to "unstuck"  a clutch without cracking it open? thanks,

You can try putting the bike in gear, pulling in the
clutch and rocking the bike forward and back.
This is a common problem, but pulling the plates may
be the only solution if that doesn't work.

Probably gummed up.  Mine were in a 175 I'm working on.  I soaked mine in Berryman B12 for a few minutes and sprayed carb cleaner on them.  Works fine now...

I have had them free up after just running the motor and getting that fresh oil circulating again. Try putting it in gear,maybe third or so,not running, but nice and warm, and rocking it back and forth with the clutch in.

but if I have to crack open the clutch, do I really need the mysterious Honda Special Clutch Nut Tool ? 
Is there any other way?

Warm the engine up in Neutral. Get the bike moving by either pointing it down hill or have someone push you on the bike while engine is idling. CAREFULLY slip it into first gear with the clutch handle pulled (yes the clutch won't disengage). While in first gear, with the clutch handle pulled inn gently rock the throttle on and off keeping the handle pulled. This usually frees them up.

The tool helps, but is often not up to the job. I've used the hammer and punch method, which really tears up the nut, but usually always works.

The aftermarket tools are usually T handles, and the 4 sprongs splay out before the nut will turn. Get a hardened tool. I think this one would do it...http://www.wemoto.com/parts/picture/HL-792299/
It takes a 1/2 inch drive which should be enough horsepower to turn the nut.

yea..at last.....victory. Much pushing and rocking and perhaps a little massage from a medium caliber rubber mallet it broke free.

Mine loosened when I started it in neutral. It sat for 15 years.

And to save it from doing that again if it's parked for an extended time I use a bungy or cable tie to pull and hold the clutch lever back to the grip. It keeps the pressure off the plates so they don't meld again.

Congrats on sorting it out.  I have reanimated quite a number of these old motors, and I will loose the stuck clutch by push starting the engine in neutral.  Once it is rolling pretty fast (while holding in the clutch) drop it into 1st gear and toodle around real slow with the clutch engaged (lever pulled) the whole time.  Then give it some blips of throttle while riding the brakes. 

It always comes loose.  You might die.  But the clutch always will break loose.  =)
