It's Alive! my free 550

I'm very pleased, this evening I fired up my free 77 550K for the first time. A friend was moving and offered me the bike which has been sitting since 1985. He told me the bike ran well when parked but had not been touched since so I cleaned the carbs after finding good compression and spark. Hooked it all up to a test tank and jumper cables and the damn thing fired right up. It was running a bit hot so I will be looking around to figure that out but it fired on all 4 cylinders and sounded fairly healthy :) Here is a  pic of the old gal,  it has a Kerker 4/1, pods and some sort of alloy wheels....the saddle was a dorky king/queen Purple Rain looking thing that I am working on a reshape and cover but I really like the basic line of this bike, sure is a proper looking motorbike...... off to a good start!!

One more pic....see the headlamp pointed north? If I put it in the proper position the ignition switch binds up leading me to thing something is bent a bit or a part is not orginal up there causing a clearance problem......

Are the headlamp ears correct ? If they're from a different model it would explain things. Maybe a CB550 guru will be able to tell from the pics if they're correct. Come to think of it, it's more likely that the ignition switch or headlight was replaced.

Hey, this is a bit like putting the cart b4 the horse (still a rusty tank ;D) but my wife and I finished the seat today, couple pics here...this started out as a dorky king/queenpurplerain nightmare, we shaped the foam and she did the cover for me....her first try came out sweet, eh?

  Not bad at all, you basically got a running bike with some nice wheels for free.  Have you done any tuning on it yet, ie checking valve clearances, checking the tank for rust, condition of the sprockets, etc.?

I have that same exhaust. My baffle had rusted out and fallen off and was rattling around inside. If you ever have that problem dynoman sells a replacement baffle for 100. I had to shorten mine to make it fit but i got it in there and it sounds good.

That seat looks great! Way better than some of my attempts at re-upholstery.  ;D

Thanks for the words of encouragement ya'll :)... one trick my wife came up with was to use binder clips (like chip clips but used with stationary) to hold the cover in place during fitment, we were able to get a good stretch and alignment before fastening to the base. The foam we shaped with a hack saw and rotary sander, big mess doing that part but fairly easy to work with.
The engine is sounding very healthy now that I removed the mouse nest from the exhaust (that was the hot running problem on the first start up) and tuned it a bit, adjusted valves (only a couple a bit loose) and set up the points gap/timing....stab the starter or kick it a couple times, kaboom!! It is a bit lean sounding but I'll wait for a road test before any more carb fiddling happens.
Used the grease gun method to get the front caliper unstuck, read about that method here, worked like a charm....felt like cheating compared to the drama of using the air compressor! Was able to reuse everything, no parts, just clean and reassemble, might go for a brake line just to be safe but it feels pretty damn good at the lever.
Next up is to get the gas tank cleaned up. Again, I'll be using info I found here, there is a jug of 'The Works' waiting in the garage...then maybe a ride around the block..hehehehe!!!

A free bike is like a free cat.  You have to feed it, stroke it ,keep it well,get its shots, see the vet, nurse it back to health and like a free cat you love it and will spend anything to get it well if it gets sick.......  Oh yeah Bikes don't shed.
