Is the High performance and Race forum working? - Discuss...
« on: November 18, 2009, 04:42:13 AM »
...so i'm a fairly regular visitor in these parts, not every day, not every hour but regular enough. I read more than I post to, that's because there's folks out there with much greater knowledge than the tidbits I can provide. However, since the high performance split happened (and I fully supported it) I've noticed two things:

1. The turnover of contributions to the HP&R forum is really quite low, small numbers of new posts and longer times between updates.
2. The turnover of contributions and threads on the SOHC4 forum has dropped. It's still lively but not like it was before the plit out of HP&R.

Are both groups suffering from less cross-posting of ideas compared to when the single SOHC4 group existed? I dunno but it feels to me like something has been lost in the split. I know some people will still post to both but not everyone it would seem? Thoughts?? Was it a good move in the cold light of day? ???

Hi LMP - As the person who suggested the split, I suppose I ought to be first to step up to the plate. The rationale for a separate forum was exactly for the reason you outline: few of the threads posted on SOHC related to racing and genuine hipo issues (as such they frequently got buried in the general topics) - it follows from this that if you partial out the racing posts, the posting frequency will be much lower when contrasted with the general forum.

My own perspective is that when I want specific info/insight on something, I'd rather have access to a specialist forum with less 'junk' traffic so I can find what I'm looking for. With regard to the slow through-put, I don't have an issue with having to wait for a real pearl of info to come along - wisdom is a prize worth waiting for.

Re: the perceived fall in postings on the general forum, that's an empirical question - what are the numbers?

Its also a time of year thing as well...in the US, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, people are putting their bikes to sleep for the winter or just beginning a project...so usual seasonal lull in Forum activity. It happens.

Im with Rod - the specialised section is useful for keeping to concentrated. More is not always better  ;)

I agree with Rod and Andy. And its not just how many new posts there are, but how many people are looking at the old posts as well. While I don't know about that... I do know, I may never post anything new here, but I scan the forum every day for recreational reading material and new ideas.

Just did a quick and dirty analysis of how frequently postings are read, subject to the usual disclaimers for sampling error and effect size:

A posting on the racing/hipo forum is likely to be read by more people than one posted on the sohc/4 forum. Statistical significance p<0.01

These preliminary results may be updated if I get insomnia, in which case I'll extend the analysis.

What do we make of these findings?

PS just seem MCRiders post pop up - MC it looks like you and the stats agree!

So maybe it's a quality vs. quantity thing and I'm cool with that.

Thanks for the stats Rod (more insomnia needed!) so more people read proportionately this Hipo forum (like the abbreviation :-)) than the main forum so maybe that means people look to the hipo forum as a kind of Oracle of information from those more experienced in engine building, design, chassis etc?

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad thing per se, something is just different for my experience and I'm struggling to put my finger on it. Perhaps I just need to crack a tinny and sit back and watch instead but I was interested in the thoughts of others as general users and supporters of the hipo splinter...

Racing and hi performance would be a niche topic so you would get fewer postings. Most of what you get on the mainstream SOHC is concerned with getting it running type posts. Once it is runningy ou may want to make it go faster.

I'll feel better about posting something new when i have something new to add. My old war stories are even old to me. And I've rehashed them soundly on SOHC4 forum and my thread.

I'd like to see here more accounts of "what's been done lately". I mean actual hi po motors and chassis that are being beat on right now. Dyno charts, drag strip times, scraping hardware on the pavement, anything current.

I love stories from KOS and MEC and any others who are actuially out flogging this stuff right now.

Of course any post is welcome I just like the new personal experience stuff.

I agree. Build threads are great don't get me wrong but I love to see how everything actually turns out when its all said in done. MEC's threads are always an inspiration to me. Yes I built it, then it broke so how do we fix it and make it better in the process?

Noticed the same LMP and I also feel a bit strange when nobody chimes into the interesting topics here, the place was getting active until the last two weeks ago, when posts diminished.

lets hope its a temporary thing but in any case, i never expected this section to be too popular. yes, its a niche thing.

Also among modern sportbike riders, the amount of people that do track days, (let alone race) or go beyond slapping just an end can and rear sets is pretty small.

I still think that this separate section is a good thing.

Posting a new topic ASAP, my Lord  ;)

I think it is easier to find the subject you are most interested in, it does not get 12 pages back if not posted to in a week.

 I think its working good..

I would like though if my thread on the flat track Hocking 750s was moved into here..

I'll be building 3, 750 engines this winter including one for me with the billet cylinder. One will be Sam's auto which will be interesting as I've never built one of them. The other is an 836 with all the nice pieces. I'll try to post as many pics as I can.

I like it the way it is. I don't have or intend to build a performance bike, but I enjoy coming over here simply to learn and see how far people are taking these old motors.

+!

gotta remember these are old tech machines and what was old is new again, etc... the old stuff can be a revelation to post-boomers.

not to say there aren't new developments. i haven't skulked around lately but last time i was here i felt wanting for more chassis stuff. ya know, that thing holding up the engine?

Working as intended, in my opinion.

Information for racing is easy to find this way. If a question isn't answered, it's probably because no one has the answer.
That means someone will go find the answer, somehow, and likely post the find once it's confirmed.

No.

...it was 25 hours since the last post on HP&R before I added this btw.

Now listen here Pie face, if you had moved you own build threads on the Somiya CR like I suggested, there would be more posting and we wouldn't be having this silly discussion, now be a good chap and get them moved over here, perhaps Frank can be swayed by your example.

Sam - maybe you could also put the thumb screws on a few others (our friend from Milan for example). As well as being an active forum, it would be really useful to have this place as a repository for the wealth of hipo knowledge that is buried away else where in the site.
