I couldn't think if a better day off. Kids at daycare, wife at work, sunny and 60 degrees in Syracuse, NY, and of course...8 hours of cleaning this engine. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ;D :D

Hey...

Nice work cleaning that engine up.  I have my engine out and I'm ready to do the same thing (clean and paint).

I was considering using an engine stand... How did you clean underneath with the engine on the dolly?

I'd like more details as you go through with your project.

Thanks, Scott

Hey Scott, I was a Bearcat! My folks are from Marathon right up route 81. We'll have to get together for a ride when I finish my bike in 10 years!  ;D I just washed the top half on the dolly and then carefully turned it over onto an old 6lb. carpet pad. Worked fine.

I appear to have several chrome rocker/tappet covers, and the rest are aluminum I think. Were some models chromed and others left alone?

Chroming the tappet covers the valve cover was a popular mod back in the day.  Over the years covers get damaged and replaced with non-chromed ones.

What year is the engine? The oil pressure switch is in a different place than mine (78K). Good luck with the piant! Keep us posted.

Nice cleaning job, I'll do mine when the riding season ends and I haul the motor out for a top end job, gonna do the partner's Suzi 400 at same time. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Engine looks great! I'm also about to do the same to mine. I think I'm going to try to rig something up to bolt it onto my "car engine" stand.

Great to see some upstate NY'ers on the board! Let alone someone from Binghamton. I've seen a few CB's riding around the Binghamton area the past few years I've owned mine. Glad to see some are a part of this board. Maybe a ride is in order when spring finally rolls around.

Wow, I love this too!
what did you use to clean the engine? did you use spray paint? where did you get a set of stainless engine bolts?
Sorry for a lot of questions but I really do like how it turned out and I might copy yours ::)

ive often left the sump pan and rocker cover off, aswell as the oil filter when refitting to the frame,an old towel draped across the lower cradle aswell, leave all the heavy stuff like starter and alternator rotor off aswell, just makes it a bit easier.,i think that flat matt black will scratch easy take care!looks good,on paper it should shed more heat aswell!
