but now how did you know it was off that much? is there a way of measuring it?

When I swapped over to the 650 Tach, it dropped by about that much  :D

you know I have a cb650 just sitting in my shop i have been debating fixing it up but I think i may strip it. so i might as well just stick the cam in my 550

it is an 82. or at least thats what i remember. It is in a pretty sorry state at the moment anyway and i already have 7 complete bikes in the garage anyway.  what is everyone running the tappet clearance at? I am thinking the factory clearance on the 550 would be fine but I want make sure that it doesn't cause enough heat to swell too tight when it gets hot

If you have a good motor in the 650 you might consider installing the entire unit rather than just the cam. . . .For the tach issues, if the 650 and SOHC 750 share the same ratio then there should be a wide range of  gauges available to keep a classic look.  Another option might be to install a custom gauge face in the stock 550 tach that corrects the readings.  Have fun.

Sorry it is not a nighthawk. standard cb650. probably should have been a little more clear about that. I have considered swapping the motors but I just did an overhaul on the 550. I may just steal the cam and take the motor out and rebuild it for a spare or continue with the thoughts of restoring it.  either way i am ganking the cam. I have been thinking about it for a while and after reading through the testimonials I have the motivation to move ahead. Some day I fear my wife is going to make me start clearing out the stable though.

There are actually alot of universal gauges on the market these days acewell and koso to name a couple reading rpm from a wire to the spark plug and a magnet on the wheel to read speed just like a bicycle i have never used a universal tach so i couldn't tell you how reliable one would be but seeing as it just reads from the spark I couldn't see it really being off. I have used a few universal speedos that used magnets on the wheel and I never found one that was very good with the always changing temperatures in the Ozarks. I think the acewell line might actually have a regular speedo cable option        just a quick google but I came up with this one pretty reasonable price i think   not my style though    http://www.electrosport.com/products/product-detail-2253.php?source=googlebase
