Gibson Atlas Amp, Lost to History??
« on: November 20, 2009, 06:30:06 PM »
I have just aquired a 60's Gibson Atlas amplifier

I am having trouble finding any information on this amp (Internet wise). I have only found bits and piece on this amp. I have even gone to Gibson forums and found nothing and no responses to posts on this amp in those forums.

I know there are some real guitar guys on here ;), can you help a brother out?
At minimum I would like to find the year cross refrence with the SN#.

I have heard that this was more of a Bass or steel guitar amp than a guitar amp, but I can't even find any info down those roads either. Any Help?

That's a nice looking example.
I found this site with a little info and a schematic:
http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dace/gg/amps3.html#Atlas-IV
http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~dace/gg/amps3.html#Atlas-IV_Power-Plus

Another schematic: http://www.prowessamplifiers.com/schematics/Gibson/Atlas_IV.html
One for sale described as a '64: http://www.musicgoround.com/detail.aspx?id=749737
Shipping totals for years sold: http://www.rru.com/~meo/Guitar/Amps/gibsonDbNoLinks.html#PowerPlus

I like tube bass amps for guitar, remember the 4-10 tweed Bassman! Good luck with it!

That's not an example, that's my amp in my "office".
I do have a 69 Fender Bassman Head that is currently out getting re-tubed, biased and the whole clean up. it was dead mint. But the tubes were on the way out.

I think the Gibson will need some work as well. It has a hum, and seems to break up to soon. .

I think it needs work, it has a considerable hum, and I think the tube are going because it has a "vibe" effect. Once I get some cash I will get her in and bring it back to stock (as close as possible).

also...to azuredesign, I did not mean to offend you. If I did, I apologize. Sorry man.

No problem Burke! Good luck with getting it fixed up, It sounds like it'll be routine and easy stuff like filter caps etc. to put it back in the pink.

Nice amp! I love the NASA-inspired naming convention.  Pity they didn't make to the "Saturn V" model!

those are some low production numbers

especially when you compare them to the numbers fender produced amps in.

They did make a Saturn model a couple of years after Burke's amp, but it didn't look nearly as cool.
