Topping up a Battery when away from the shop.
« on: November 21, 2009, 12:13:53 PM »
I got stuck the other day, battery needed water, and did not have all my tools here.

So I am looking around the house for a hose or whatnot.. and I decide to use ...a pen.. Staples brand.. looks like a bic, lucky no hole on the side..
field strip it into 3 parts, get a cup of  water (not distilled unfortunately) Get off the battery caps. Wet end of finger, insert pen into cup, put wet finger over open end of pen body,  drain into battery cell hole !..  repeat,.. MANY times, check occaisionally....works pretty good, but slow..

Hey, it works in a pinch..

An ordinary drinking straw will work as well.

Whenever I use a drinking staw it dribbles from the pressure of trying to hold it. The rigid pen works in a pinch, but my all-time fave is a turkey baster.  Now, NO "turkey" comments, okay?

Oops... I just realized you said away from the shop, and I'm probably the only guy who always carries his own turkey baster, right?  ;D  RR

Whenever I use a drinking straw it dribbles from the pressure of trying to hold it.
Then wet your finger to improve the finger seal on the end.

And, ...so what if it dribbles water?  You using a paper frame?

What melts on the bike in the rain?

Drinking straw is great, used it before but hard to find.. sometimes..

In the past I have used the baster. in the shop I use, I think it is called a glass pipette (narrow graduated cylinder, with eyedropper end). I try to use something with lower volume, easy to overfill with the baster...

Is it just me or is it freaking difficult to see level from the side on a lot of batteries..

It's cool, Dude. You can use a straw if you really want to... No problemo.  ;D  RR

MacGyver would be proud!  :)  I once (temporarily) fixed a leaking gas tank with chewing gum :)  Later I did a more permanent fix with a soda can and two-part epoxy :D

Stop by your local pharmacy and ask if they have a 10cc syringe. Better yet ask them for an oral dosing syringe for your baby. You might get that free.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

You're not the only one, a strong flashlight held against the side of the battery helps with that.

I tip the battery back and forth to see the fluid level, use the turkey basterd when I'm at home, but the pen idea is cool.

Long time ago me and the ex went riding across kansas on the hottest day ever there.  115 on fresh black top.  Anyway the battery fried.  Had to push start every stop.  Got to manhaten ks and the battery was low.  For being a collage town nobody knew what distilled water was.  Went to half a dozen stores and had to explain what it was.  Nobody had any.  Used tap water and made it home a couple days later after bussness and thought I would freeze to death at 75 degrees.
