CB400f re-bore question
« on: November 21, 2009, 09:04:21 AM »
I am restoring an old cb400f with 56,000 miles on it. It is time for a engine rebuild and I was wondering if I should hone the cylinders and put in a new ring set or try this option http://www.cmsnl.com/products/piston-set-025_00000kit0506/

If I go with the option from cmsnl.com do I need a bigger head gasket? I have purchased a complete engine gasket set but it includes a head gasket for stock pistons.

Thanks in advance.

Ask your machinist to check out the pistons before installing them (a good machinist will do this anyway).  If they are the same diameter, same weight, and look like clean productions, then I would assume they are okay to use.  I'm sure your machinist will give you his/her thoughts too.

You will not need a larger head gasket to handle the larger pistons.  The difference is negligible.  Just use the stock one as is.  You'll love it.

Thanks for the quick response. I am trying to make the bike as reliable as possible for a 1976. It is an everyday rider so I have switched to an electronic ignition and I am going to replace the primary and cam chain. This is why I thought I would do the pistons while I was at it, but if it required a different size head and basket gasket I don't want to do it just because it would be harder to find.
