The Yorkshire Mile is a new discipline that's been set up because the fastest bikes have out grown the track.
Elvington is the only track we have use of and is only 1.9 miles long.
Mile racing became popular when the ECTA set one up at Maxton in Carolina, one of our members here is Keith Turk, he is the ECTA race director and although Maxton is long gone, they have a new track in Ohio.
Over here, it was stretched to a mile and a quarter but with bikes hitting 265 mph, stopping in time became a problem.
What we have now is two short speed traps set up at 1 mile from each end of the air field giving riders .9 of a mile to stop in.
Bikes then turn round and must make the return run within the hour to get a two way mean average speed.
The two speed traps are quite close to one another in the middle of the runway and the ACU have decided that they are close enough to be deemed the same track covered.
