Well with all the fun at the Hotel yesterday morning, I forgot to mention that the $10,000 Nostalgia event at Commerce Raceway was rained out.
I got in touch with friend Tim Houghland-Birchfield at 6pm who told us the event would be run today Sunday. It was rather sad as Tim had to work today and couldn't attend the re run.
The morning dawned bright and by 9am we were back at the track.
We were only allowed one practice pass and then had to figure out what times to dial for the first round.
We were called to the lanes just after 12 mid day and I drew the left lane against young gun Revvin Kevin Erler on his GSXR750.
I cut a killer light against Kev and with my handicap start of .86 of a second, Kevin went early by just one thousandths of a second to pull a red light in his haste to chase me down. Any racer would be suicidal loosing out by .001 of a second but Kevin would have lost anyway as he outran his dial in time. First blood to the old Honda.
3.15 pm saw us back in the pairing lanes for round 2. I was told I had a bye run as there was an odd number of riders and I was deemed to be the number 1 qualifier because I had had the fastest reaction time to the lights in round one, this meant that I didn't have to race anyone and automatically advanced to round 3. (money in sight. haha)
The good news was short lived when a rider dropped out and evened up the numbers. The draw was made and I couldn't have picked a worse person to race against, my facebook friend, Track and National Champion Jimmy cha cha Heisler.
I nailed Jimmy off the line but at the top end his bike was easily in front to send me home.
What a great event with great people. Many thanks to my team mate Bill Benton for making this happen. Pictures from the event to follow.
Sam.
