When our own Mike Rieck met the King of Europe.

Mike chats with multi European Top Fuel Champion Ian King in the SOHC4 encampment.

Yes, Bill did. Bill is there an 11 in that bike's future? ;)

Sam's being coy with how he did Sunday. All I know is that he was out by the quarter finals per dragbike.com. I did see a 12.15 dial on the bike in one picture. Did Sam have another personal best on Sunday? Inquiring minds want to know. Sam's coverage was great as usual. Those white leathers seem to get the photographers attention, don't they?

How'd Frank do on Sunday?

Was the morning time trial reaction time seed you for first round? Changed from when I was there.

We're not being coy Scott, we're that tired (and pi$$ed) without pulling the time slips we can't remember.
The video when we can get it to load will tell all...let's just say it was embarrassing for one rider and it wasn't me. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.

Frank struggled to get the big F dialed in, a road tyre instead of the slick made dial ins a problem for him and he went out early doors.

My guess is that Sam went out in the third round. If he had made the fourth round, Bill wouldn't have only mentioned that he was close to the money. Sounds like Frank didn't have enough practice with the bike, resulting in being too quick/too slow/ redlighting in the first round/bought back in and repeated the option list in the second round.

Sam is rubbing in Bill's breakout in the fourth round on Saturday where he covered his opponent by a mile and probably broke out. Bracket racing object is to beat your opponent to the finish line, not to run a 12.40 on a 12.40!
Anyone else notice Bill's 836 at 12.40 dial-in and Sam at a 12.15? Hondamatics properly set up are easier to go quick than the clutch equivalent. Yes Sam's bike was a 915, but the point is that you have to have confidence in your skills and bike to race them. Sam was nervous way back when to drive a quicker bike than he had previously driven. Now look at him!

If you're red lighting by a little, say .001 or .002, just drop the front tire pressure by a few pounds. It slightly changes your roll out, slowing your reactions a little. .020's for reactions are far safer in that event than trying for perfection in reactions.

I think that Bill and Sam need more practice. Next year some time? I'm planning on being at the Virginia event with a Hondamatic. Really could use a Cup schedule for 2014 when it comes out.

Team Pollard out of Canada did real well considering the bike had a new rider on it. He didn't run as fast as the previous rider but he turned some very respectable times on the bike from CANADA. ::)
I guess a lot of their success was down to the fact that Mikes friend Rick Stetson had been working on the bike and he was there with the team to guide them. Rick is the guy that does all of Mikes machine work.

As for Canadian bikes.....Sam, didn't a Canadian Top Fuel/Nitro Harley win the FIM / EuroCup last year?  There've been lots of fast Canadian riders, they have to be to stay warm. ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Jon,

I as short a report as possible; "I sucked"- lol.  I struggled with the bike when we arrived on saturday due to a back exhaust leak on the #1 cylinder. I failed to put in the new exhaust gaskets although they cleared were in the new CycleEX gasket kit when i was working on the bike at home. I looked in the head before putting the new V&H sidewinder on the bike and saw my old ones were still in place even after the fresh valve job so i commenced to put the pipe on so i could get the bike ready. What a darn mistake it turned out to be. I took the pipe aloose a few times to readjust it and them bolted it back up just to get the same results. I finally decided to roll it back in the trailer and concentrate on my other 2 bikes i had entered into top gas( 8.20 index) and Crazy 8's ( 8.88 index). I made 2 qualifying passes on the Crazy 8's bike with the first pass netting a 9.17@152 and the next pass was below the index with an 8.76@149mph. On my TG bike, it left good and hard but seemed to miss shift once but towards the trap something didn't seem right so i shut i down to run an 8.41@141mph. My last T/G pass i ran an 8.11@149 rolling in and out of the throttle. Well, at least i was on the top side of the ladder in the index classes. I just had to do my job during elimination to turn the win light on. After all the qualifying was over, i pulled the Honda back out and pulled the pipe completely off to get a second look at the gasket. IT was mainly leaking on the top side so i tried to reposition the pipe and tighten the #1 tube down first and i also added washers to all of the studs hoping to get a bit move travel from the flange. I worked under the lights and finally cranked it up to find it was still leaking. Earlier, Wilbur put a bug in my ear about using some copper electrical wire and mentioned there might be some back in the construction demolition dumpster at his hotel. Of course this got my mind working so the next morning(sunday), me and the wife headed to Walmart. I found some 3 strand electrical wiring rolls there but they wanted $50 for it when i only needed a small piece. I also thought about the hardness of the wire and realized it might not compress enough to seal. I then went over in the automotive section and found the biggest stranded wire they carried which was 12 guage. My plan was to strip the wire and spiral enough of it in the port for the pipe to compress it and seal the leak. I got the pipe back off, put the wire in place just as they were calling for first time run in Street ET. I rode the bike over to pay registration fees, then rode it to tech. On my way back to tech i decided to test my air shifter. It wouldn't shift- WTF? My bike is not set up to foot shift. I checked it over in  the lanes and realized the air line to the shift cylinder has slipped out. I rode the scooter back to the trailer, found a new ferrel, grabbed some wrenches to repair the line. I got the line fixed and sent the wife back to get my air tank to replenish the air. I got in the line just in time to make a run. The bike sounded good in the burnout box so i went to the line to make the pass hoping for the best. This would be the 1st run on a completely new set up as fas as the light weight wheels with a street tire, lighter chain with offset sprocket and aftermarket brakes. The motor was fresh with limit run time. I pulled to the lights, pre staged, brought my rpms up and staged. The light came down and i dropped the hammer but instead of launching clean and straight, the tire lit up and the ass of the bike crossed up a bit. It finally hooked but it jumped out of gear for some reason (freshly undercut tranny). It only ran an 11.27 but at least it got from one end of the track to the other and didn't blow up- lol. I did have an .050 light so i was okay with that for the first pass after 3 plus years off the bike. I got back to the pits and started to check things over on the bike when they called first round eliminations for street- crap. No time to charge the battery. Alright, now i have to come up with a dial in. I knew my 60' time was way off but i still needed to be conservative on my dial in so i had the wife to put a 10.99 on because i had to launch at a lower rpm with the street tire than i was used to on the slick. If if cut a good light, i knew i could always "play the stripe". As my luck would have it, i drew a fellow South Carolinian as my opponent. He had the bye run and i was the odd bike. He's a young up and coming racer with a great attitude but also a tough competitor. I knew i had to cut a better light. I did a good burnout to get the tire hot and sticky. I think he dialed a 9.30 to my 10.99 so he had to wait a bit to chase me down. I got the rpms where i wanted them before staging all the way in, the light came down and i hammered the throttle while feathering the clutch and off we went without the tire breaking aloose. Okay, i felt pretty good leaving the line but all of a sudden it jumped out of gear- damn. I hit the air shifter button again and it back in. At this point i'm over half track and look back to find my man but he is way behind me. I knew that big ZX14 was going to close the gap quick so i hit my final shift point and then look back again as the mph cone was approaching fast. I decided it was time to roll out of the throttle because i didn't want to break out as this must have been much quicker pass than i dialed in. As the ET cone was in sight i finally tapped my brakes and crossed the line but..... my win light didn't come on. About then i see Jordan out of the corner of my eye and his win light jumps on. SOB- i must have broken out anyway. Got the time slip and sure enough, the bike ran a 10.83@105mph. Oh boy, i missed the dial in by the mile.

Sounds as if a K8 shifter-drum and a little more time to get the feel of the rear tire could get you under 10.6 8) 8) 8)

Although it was in cool moist air when the bike turned a PB in testing a few weeks back at Commerce, I said to Billy, I wonder if this new motor will start waking up like the 836 did after a few events.
True to form, the bike ran a stout 12.332 @ 114.48 mph in the Friday evening testing at Bradenton and backed it up the following morning with a 12.337 @114.70 mph.
I blew a fuse at the end of that run and by the time I got back, I missed the second qualifier that we weren't expecting as only one qualifying run was on the schedule.
The first round was called and I went with Billy to the lanes but after a few minutes, one of the team came rushing up and said come get your leathers on, the bike is running.
I rushed back, suited up and was in the lanes just in time for my first elimination round.
I didn't get chance to warm the bike fully and it was nearly 2 hours since it ran so I guessed it might not go as quick so I dialed a 12.35.....BIG MISTAKE....I got held up on the line as it was spitting with rain and the temperature of the oil went to 142...a flyer out of the hole saw me break out with a 12.244 pass @ 113.35.
As I suspected, the big motor was coming to life.
We were allowed to buy back in after the first round so new team member Larry went in search of where to pay with our $20.
It was all rush and the motor was still warm so I dialed down to 12.21 in the hope that I'd be somewhere near it. I came up against a Busa on a 9.03 dial and these things come past you like a steam train on the line so I wasn't planning on looking back as it's almost impossible to judge the closing speed of a bike traveling 50 to 60 mph faster.
BIG MISTAKE AGAIN...I did look back and I did sit up as he was nowhere in sight. I killed him on the lights with a .022 to his .363 and the big Samauto decided to put in another PB despite the sit up before the line.
The bikes new record now stands at 12.183 seconds, equaling a time that Billy had seen in a race a month earlier.
The first qualifier on Sunday was nothing special, the first run never is so I wasn't worried, 12.304 @ 114.21 mph.
Just over an hour later I was in the lanes chatting to my friend Manny on his 9 second V Rod, I met Manny at the Finals last year, quite an accomplished local racer, we were in his back yard.
I dialed down from my qualifier to 12.23, I knew I only needed a good light to beat him.
HERE IT IS PEOPLE...001....unfortunately it had one of these in front of it, -  It was one thousandths of a second to soon  ::)
Just to piss us right off, Mr RED LIGHT BENTON did exactly the same, we both had -001 lights, ::) time to get the buy back money out. >:(
I leave the 12.23 dial and go back to the lanes when called, I draw some guy on a 9.07 Gixxer 1000.
We both go into pre stage, I go to full stage and notice his full stage light come on then go off again.
Manny had warned me about a guy who tries to mess with your head on the lights and I thought I he had found me. >:( My first yellow glows bright and on the other side of the tree there is a equally great big bright RED. ;D ;D ;D ;D game over, I make a steady pass and collect my win ticket on the way back.
We watch some of the races and I start to load things into the trailer that we don't need as it is starting to get dark, less to load later I'm thinking and then I hear the commentator talking about Manny who is on the line.
Panic stations, I get ready and rush to the line but it's to late, I've missed the call. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
On the whole, it was a great event, we both enjoyed it as did Wilbur, Mike, Jerry, Kenny, Todd, Keith and our newest member Larry from a Benly forum that I frequent, thanks for all your help and support guys, we would have been lost without you.
