I started about a month ago with a locked up cb550 and about 1000 dollars now its running but its funny what some people will say about (LIE) and do to (screw up) when it comes to old bikes. The locked up motor turned out to be one hell of a blown clutch that made its way threw the transition. I had procured a low milage spare from a friend of a friend for the price on a case of beer and a back ache and after looking at the oil and the valve seal leakage it was the grand adventure of a simple motor swap (simple
. 2 weeks and a full carb rebuild later (get the oring kit with the rebuild kits its worth it) and she started and i thought i was done. At this point i had 500 dollars in the bike in all and i thought i was the man. BTW i am not the man and the bike was far from done....
so far i have rebuilt or replaced:
stator (they will go bad with out being dropped i can send you one to prove it)
push and pull cables throttle
both coils
plugs points condensers
left hand switches
rebuilt master cylinder and caliper
home made rectifier and regulator
new wiring harness threw out the bike (it was a hack job)
new chain and both sprockets
new grips
and a EMGO 1/4 fairing for the kinda long runs on the blue ridge parkway (hopefully soon)
These are some pics of the day i got the bike all the pin striping is now gone ill post more pics and a video of it in its new condition
I guess the reason i am posting this is to say thanks all this great info that you guys have collected.
I will be posting a electrical guide on the charging system and ignition system using this bike as an example. My current job involves electrical education and i thought i could do my part to help.
Cheers
