Is it really necessary to file the piston rings?
« on: December 21, 2005, 03:59:11 AM »
I took the head of my "boat anchor" -CB350twin for the rest of the world outside Australia- to the machinist shop. I have finally decided to reuse the valves, so they will resurface them and the seats. The machinist had not yet honed the cylinders, but he had already welded the broken fin. It was rough, but the guy told me he didn't want to finish it off so I coud do it myself??? I thought he was plain lazy, but he told me it's soft and I can do it myself so it won't be difficult and I can finish it the way I like. OK, that will be fine.

He told me the valves are reusable so there we go. I have new exhaust valves, but not intake. DSS have them for 10 quid, that's a good price, but the old ones have still a lot of miles on them, so I can replace the valves for new ones in 10 years or so.

Long story short, DSS doesn't have the 0.25 oversize rings (I guess Honda will but I don't know yet). I told the guy I'm having trouble finding them, and that once I got it I would have to check the ridge gap as per manual. He told me I shouldn't have to file the ends of the rings. If they are the right size, they should just go in. I should have to file the ends in case I was using the .50 or .75 oversize, but not for the right size.

So the question is: is that true? Doesn't you have to check the ridge gap and file it in case it is smaller?

The rule of thumb is .003" per inch of bore when it comes to ring gaps. Push the rings down about an inch in the bore with the piston (held upside down) and check. To small is bad. To large isn't that good but you won't seize a ring either.

Raul I have NEVER had to file rings that were the correct oversize for the bore. Hondas QC checks seem to be too good to need that sort of thing! It was only the really old stuff when QC didnt exist and rings was just rings, didnt matter what engine they came out of. It may be easier for you to get 0.5 piston kits and have the block bored again than find 0.25 rings. If you have the part number try www.westernhillshonda.com although dss buys from them anyway
