Need Some Help on Tank Decal
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:08:21 PM »
Hi Folks,

I am really not sure exactly what I have here...  A 73 frame with a 70 engine and 69 seat so since I have the black headlight and the chrome headlight ears I have decided to change the tank paint from a 73 to a 72 style.  I don't have the measurements of the black stripe so if anyone has one of these tanks could you send me the measurements?  Thanks in advance...

Well, it is really hard to believe that no one has a tank like like this.   It is even harder to believe that there isn't someone out there who will share the measurements with another Honda SOHC/4 driver.

A simple "bump" would suffice.

Do you need measurements because you're planning on painting the stripes?  The decals are available from a few different places still.

"Bump?"  I would if I knew what that was.  Guess I am getting up there in age....LOL

Yes, I have the tank in to be painted.  I am painting it myself and just waiting on the paint kit from oldhondapaints which will be here on Thursday.

I can't see paying that much for the decal when I have to supply the black paint.  So, I have the black paint and just need the measurements on the width of the black area and the size of the pinstripes since I am not going with the 73 paint scheme on the old tank and going with the 72 paint scheme.

Thanks for getting back to me...Dan

You don't need to supply black paint for the decal stripe.  The black stripe with the small white stripes is the decal, and that's how it is on the factory painted tanks, too.  The decal just goes under the clear coat so it blends in nicely with the color coat.

That is not what Don at http://www.vintagehondapaint.com/Site/vintagehondapaint.com.html told me.  He siad that I would need the black paint and it was $20 and the decal was $45.

So...anyway, I still need the measurements to put the painted decal on the tank....Dan

Well i'm sorry mate but Don is wrong...they are plastic decals and as Gordon said, they just stick on the tank and are cleared over..

A bump is just when you goto the topic you started and hit reply and simply put bump or +1 or some thing in the reply to move your topic to the top of the list so it maybe seen by those that were not on when you posted it the first time. At least that's how I understand it. Its a good way to get more replies..

Wish I had a 72, however all I have is a tank from a 75 550f and an unknown year 400.. sorry I could not help. I would bet Hondaman has one.. or maybe can get you the measurements.. Might try sending him a message and see..

birdmannn101,

Using a set of reproduction decals that have not been installed, these are the measurements I recorded:

The black inner portion is 1-1/4" and that's the widest part beginning at the front of the tank, then it begins to gradually taper down towards the rear.

The white line is 1/8"

The black line which borders the white line is 1/16"

(click on example pics to enlarge)

Thanks Retro Rocket for the link on the decals.  I am staying clear of them because I have heard they are hard to lay properly on the tank.

Zaipai - Thanks, Hondaman supplied me with the measurements and some good tips on painting the decal.

Hinomaru - Great pictures and measurements.  I needed those final 2 measurements (white stripe and distance from the edge to the white stripe.  Thanks again for all the help.

Maybe the misunderstanding is because you have described your bike as a K3, which requires the extra black paint for the interior of the decal. Look at the difference in the decals in the link that retro rocket has provided.

So... you have already purchased the extra black paint but not the decals?

I did a repaint on my K1 a couple of years ago and it was money well spent. Vintage Honda paint, Reproduction decals, reproduction sidecovers from David Silvers/LPM. Afterwards, the painter said he might rather paint the stripes on, instead of using the decals, for a better finish. I have NO complaints with the finished product, although it took a couple of tries to get the correct decal.

I use soapy water to put decals on, it allows you to slide them around without sticking so you can get them in the correct place and when the soap dries out they are there forever....There is nothing wrong with painting them on but most people use the correct decals.... ;)

on my sons motocross bike we use windex.

spray liberally, remove backing from decal, position as you wish.
appyl a finger touch here and there.
when you are satisfied with the placement.use a sqweegeee(sp?) to remove the windex.
(i use windex, as other brands dont seem to work as well)

this works for MX bikes, but you may have to customize it a bit for a new paint job
