Too new don't know what to do but doing it anyway
« on: November 27, 2009, 11:32:02 PM »
Hello all,

My name is Chris, I'm 43 and I'm a hondaholic. I recently purchased a CB750K7 that I found on Craig's List that has been
sitting outside under a tarp since the early 90's. This is my second motorcycle, my first being a 2002 Honda 600 Shadow Deluxe,
which I had learned to ride on (after a motorcycle safety course) when I was 38. I had to sell the Shadow after 2 years for financial
reasons and was without a bike until now. Here's what happened...
I recently watched a movie that had made a huge impression on me when I was a younger child.  The movie is Psychomania and it
had some bad ass Triumph's in it that the gang rode.  After watching the movie I began looking for vintage Triumph's and decided that
I should own one. Once again money sneered and said "you can't afford it, go back to your mini van."  "Like Hell!" I replied and foolishly
continued my search.
That is when I found the vintage Honda's were within my reach and the styling had the same appeal as the Triumph for me. The
Honda CB750 on the top 3 bikes list was the clincher.
I bought this bike on Halloween and it needs a lot of work to get it one the road again.  I have never worked on bikes but am determined
to learn and this is my first.  Man am I thankful for the internet and all the help it is providing me.  Many thanks for this site, I know that I am not alone.
So far I bought a battery at Pep Boys and tried to get her going, she cranks but does not start. The throttle was frozen, I got it to move
a bit, the choke was stuck, I got it to move pretty well, gas poured out of the carb intake tubes when I turned the petcock and my house smelled like gas for a week, there is a lot of rust and the front tire is flat, the left turn signal is broken, and my wife looks at me like I have six heads, but I have the carbs apart down in my basement and I am probably in over my head and I have began to worry that I may have an obsession being that I am always looking and thinking and dreaming about and down in the basement until the wee hours working on motorcycles. Now all I have to do is get this one running so I can actually RIDE again.

Welcome to the psychomania of vintage Hondas.  ;D

I got the bug when my partner had a CB650 she was learning to rebuild. Not only was it her 1st bike, but she had never even ridden on one in her life. She found this site and these wonderful people who are inflicted with the same bug and 3 years later (no funds will hold ya back a bit) it is a beautiful looking and running machine. I now have a companion bike to hers (but it's been sacrificed to the spare parts gods a bit too much so it's just sitting in the garage awaiting fundage) and now I just got a '69 350 Scrambler. (my personal love affair with those types of bikes goes waaaay back) I'm just starting on my journey into the bottomless pit of bike rebuilding. At least I only have 1/2 as many carbs to synch as the rest of you.  :D

These guys and gals are great for helping a person out. Your camera will be your and our best friend when you run into snags. Go start a build thread if you haven't already, put the year and model in the title. You will tend to get better and quicker responses that way. Some just know their own particular model, others have a vast knowledge of these sohc4s. Some of these people have truly unique and inventive ways of doing things for free or very cheaply but it works and looks great. Also, make sure people have an idea where you generally live so you can get some local in-person help if needed. These people are truly wonderful to deal with.

Good luck!!  :)
1969 CL350 Scrambler... almost done!!! Well, until something else goes wrong. :)
2006 HD 883 Sportster, stock. No use changing it, it's still gonna be a Harley.

Hi from Australia, welcome to the friendliest site for SOHC enthusaists... more than enough information on here to make your brain numb from overload.

Best method - KISS (keep it simple stupid)....do one thing at a time, do it right, then you know how and can do it again when you need to.

We also like lots of pictures... and we even argue a bit (nicely of course)...

welcome   :)

Hiya  Chris,

The throttle was frozen, I got it to move a bit, the choke was stuck, I got it to move pretty well, gas poured out of the carb intake tubes when I turned the petcock and my house smelled like gas for a week, there is a lot of rust and the front tire is flat, the left turn signal is broken, and my wife looks at me like I have six heads, but I have the carbs apart down in my basement

Yup, so a thorough carb cleaning is definitely the first thing to do.  Take lots of pics before disassembling the carbs, lots of small parts there that only fit together properly one way.  Strip the carbs down all the way and scrub/soak/blow out the various chambers and passages.  There are many small twisty passages inside the carb that need to be very clean.  Make sure you can blow air through all of them and have it come out the other end.  Order up some new jets unless yours are very clean and even then new ones may be a good idea (POs sometimes drill them out).  New jets are relatively inexpensive and well worth the savings in frustration.

Once the carbs are clean and reinstalled, put in a new air filter, perform initial adjustment on the carbs, and see if she fires up.

Keep us posted on your progress!

cheers

Welcome! I think this place can get you through anything you want to do.
I too have a CB750K7 Craigslist find. It's difficult for me to find the time to work on mine with family and a 110 year old house. (I guess I like old stuff  ;D) But the forum keeps my interest up.
Post some pics!
I'll have to check out Psychomania. Trashy 60s-70s biker flicks are my new guilty pleasure.
